I would personally never hand out my VIN to anyone. PERIOD. I keep it 697,564 bit digitally encrypted. They can determine your blood hematocrit from your VIN. Next thing you know you’re abducted by aliens and getting experimented on. Not doing that. Well actually you won’t know since they erase your memory.

wait, what’s a VIN??
It's that number that any Joe Blow in the parking lot can read through your windshield.

You can't buy motorcraft pads for a Bronco at Autozone. I tried

Believe me I'm not just throwing out a conspiracy theory. I actually did the research and this is where I landed. It's not possible to buy Ford OEM parts, at least not the brake pads without going through the hoop.
For those looking for high-quality non-OEM pads, what you want are:

Bosch QuietCast BC2216 premium ceramic front disc brake pad set
Bosch QuietCast BC2414 premium ceramic rear disc brake pad set

And for rotors:

Bosch 50011933 (front)
Bosch 50011934 (rear)

Are these the kind that are supposed to last until pigs fly and the cows come home?

I visited both stores in the search. I kind of wanted to just keep the stock pads because they're a known good option I think. Never much cared for alternate pads on other vehicles I've worked on.

Regarding the Fast Eddie question,

Short version
If you want to repair your own vehicle you must provide the VIN to be allowed the opportunity to purchase the parts required for that vehicle.

Read into it what you will and in five years let's chat about the current state of the Right to Repair Act.
I'm not gonna read through this whole thread, so if someone else has said this I'm reiterating it.

Ford wanting your VIN is a CYA for Ford. They don't want to be held accountable if you purchase the wrong parts for your vehicle, or put a part that isn't meant for your vehicle on your vehicle. If something happens, a lawyer has determined that they COULD be held liable if they didn't make sure it will fit your vehicle. It has NOTHING to do with the pads being VIN matched to your vehicle.

I ran into this back when I had my '04 F350. It was white, my FIL had a white '08 F450 that he was putting a wind gate on. I liked the '08-10 tailgate, since it said 'Super Duty' across the back. Had seen plenty of them on '99-07 trucks, so I knew it was possible. Ford dealer claimed it wasn't, it wouldn't show parts that interchanged under the VIN.

Turned out after some searching on a forum specific for those trucks, that you either needed to buy a different driver's side hinge (which I found the part number for, and could have bought online without a VIN), OR you could take out the rubber insert (which is attached to the lift-assist torsion rod)...and it slid right in place, with a perfect fit.

Brake pads, they're more likely to be stingy about, because they're no question a safety-related product. they want to make sure you've got the right ones for the application.

All that said, a quality brake pad from any auto parts store is just as good as the stock pads. Obviously don't get the cheapest ones, but for example CarQuest Gold series are good quality pads and I've had no issues with them in the 30 years I've been changing brakes.

I think the OP is talking about this:

President Donald Trump says he had a "great meeting" with the heads of General Motors, Ford and racing team legend and businessman Roger Penske this week about legislation that, in the president's words, would prohibit people from repairing their own motor vehicles.

On Thursday, June 4, he said the auto officials "want a bill that prohibits people from fixing" their cars, though it was unclear what legislation Trump was referring to. There are various pieces of legislation being bandied about Congress that would protect owners' rights to repair their own vehicles, though in some cases those rights might be restricted, or owners could be required to meet certain safety standards.

This was from a news article. The right to repair act is what is in congress which actually forces manufactures to make the diagnostic ability open to others. that I found in these articles.

  • REPAIR Act: Introduced in both chambers, it would require automakers to give independent shops the same diagnostic and repair data access as dealerships. This is supported by independent shops, parts makers, and many consumers ethicalmechanic.org+1.
  • Automakers’ pushback: Groups like the Auto Alliance and NADA argue that today’s agreements already provide independent shops with the tools and information they need, and that restricting access would protect dealers’ service facilities Autoweek.

I recall the deal with a bill this year with mandated kill switches in all new vehicles????
Regardless of VIN info, that kinda concerns me as well. Believe it or not, sometimes we don't know till we KNOW. How is "cash for Clunkers" working out for all of us with old iron?
That is the point of this thread and a few concerns.
I've worked for DoD and with a few other ABCs for decades and there is no "trust" there.......I know. :cautious:

I ordered brake pads for a Mazda 3 once and didn't put in the vin. I was confused when the wrong size pads showed up... That was the day I learned that Mazda's Mexico plant and Mazda's Japan plant use different parts.

I threw away the pads for Japan models and ordered some for my made in Mexico car.
This example and so many more ! Any order I get needs a VIN to confirm or no returns allowed ! Bronco brakes may only have one option BUT who`s to say you, @Knownman, didn`t fat finger the order and put the wrong number in ? Many Ford parts numbers use the same letters and numbers in different order on the prefix . one example is F4TZ and FT4Z --totally different vehicles.

It doesn’t surprise me that big corporations want to force us to use “pros” to do the job and eventually everyone will want to be similar to John Deere and their software will be leased to you. But it is laughable to me because most folks I know cant or don't work on their own stuff and think Im crazy because I do and have taught my oldest daughter to do the same. My youngest married a guy who is mechanically inclined so she is covered as well.

My experience is sites use the VIN in order to ensure the part fits your particular vehicle thus eliminating returns. The REAL conspiracy is the ABS part manufacturers placing the pressure transducer inside the pump assembly. The transducer used to be connected on the master cylinder. It took two minutes to swap out and cost about $50. Today, you need to buy the entire pump assembly $1650 at a minimum and then an entire brake system bleed using Forscan or an adequate scanner. ( F 150 example).

CAT and Cummins parts counter peeps require partial vin (cat requires the complete vin) because that’s how their search mechanism is designed to find parts quickly and easily. They don’t even want to know the model. That’s how they are used to doing it, thus their preferred method. And quite frankly some of the new ones have no clue how to find it otherwise.
AND YES Farley has stated that normal folks have no business repairing today’s Fords because they are “too complicated” for normal humans lol.

BUT Lets talk about the O’Reillys parts counter person who can’t hand you a 3’ section of 3/4” heater hose without a make model and year. Lol. It’s pretty sad really. (It’s for my John Deer tractor dumbass).

No, I didn’t read the whole thread because it went off the rails pretty quickly.

I can promise that my VIN # is not what the eye in the sky is concerned about when it comes to profiling me. It has far bigger worries with me thanks to the microphones in the car and what comes out of my mouth when dealing with DC traffic. Willing to bet my social security number, person profile number, DNA chain, and blood type are all registered by every known (and unknown) anti-hate group lined along K Street at this point. And if they don't hit that gas peddle when the light turns green, after one too many Diet Cokes by 4:30pm on a Tuesday, I'm ready to burn down their entire village and nuke their asses....and I'm pretty sure Alexa, Ford, Apple, CIA, NSA, Kazakhstan, and your fat lazy-ass mother who should've stayed home that night, all know it...

I have been told numerous times that I need Jesus between the hours of 3:00-7:00pm M-F.

Fun fact - I don't think you can knock the alignment out of a Ford Bronco.

PS: My wife made me give up the actual land-line phone in our home a few years ago, after she realized I only wanted it to "assist" with the Microsoft Help Desk guy who had detected a virus on my computer (Apple) and wanted to help me fix it.. Figured it was much cheaper than an actual therapist, and too ashamed to discuss with the Preacher. But, when Jr. hit middle school and thought it was funny...I had to say goodbye to "Hank from India..napolis".

Our expectations are way off base for a minimum wage culture. That’s all I’m gonna say. This is getting to be an X thread
