A windshield chip doesn't always become a crack right away. That's what makes them tricky.

One thing we've seen over the years is that the moment a windshield gets damaged and the moment you notice the problem aren't always the same.

A small rock strike can leave behind a tiny chip that seems harmless. Then days or weeks later, temperature changes, road vibration, or normal stress on the glass can help that damage spread.

That's why a windshield can seemingly "crack out of nowhere."

If you spot a chip, especially near the edge of the windshield, don't ignore it just because it hasn't spread yet. Catching it early may mean the difference between a repair and a full replacement.

And if you've ever walked out to your Bronco and discovered a crack you swear wasn't there the night before... you're definitely not the only one.

They definitely get worse when it's hot. It can get to 100 - 110* in my area. I've seen chips that don't change for months. Then one day when it's 105*+ the crack will spread. Once it starts to spread a little, it will spread quickly to the edge of the windshield.

It can be nerve wracking if you're driving it while it's spreading. It makes a shattering sound while it's spreading.

I tired a cheap Amazon 'repair' resin kit from Amazon on my 04 Jeep a couple years ago. Didn't seem to help at all. It was fine until a hot day.

Those DIY resin kits can be pretty hit or miss. Once a chip is there, getting it properly filled sooner rather than later is usually your best shot at keeping it from spreading. Heat, vibration, and temperature swings aren’t very forgiving once the glass is already compromised.


Curious, did the resin actually fill the chip and it still eventually spread, or did it never really seem to bond in the first place?

Project Farm reviewed different crack repair kits and got good results with some of them. He did the repairs then asked a professional to evaluate the results.

I followed the directions. It lasted until a hot day, then spread. Luckily an 04 Jeep TJ window was around $150 installed, generic glass.
