2.3L A/C Compressor Belt - INSTALL

Somewhere along I-10 in west Texas, my A/C compressor belt decided to hit the ol' dusty trail and pursue it's 21+k mile dream of calf-roping. Like many broken belts before it, its dream was over before it began...

Well, I found the old belt as it was hanging onto a charge pipe clamp screw and supported by the skid plate. It was half peeled and inside out.

**old in foreground, new in the rear

The install, with $20 tool, Lisle 59370 Stretch Belt Remover / Installer, and $20 belt went super smooth after a bit of resistance on the crank that I'm attributing to the other, larger belt. I was also being very very gentle because, while I knew it should work, I was also following a random YouTube video to play with my modern engine.

I'm 6'3" and have a decent wingspan, so this picture is how far I had to reach my arm in to set the belt, and hold/guide it on the grooves, on the compressor pulley.

*My trusty Craftsman(good old days manufacture) 1/2" torque wrench and a 21mm deep socket--regular socket and ratchet handle would've worked too--on the main crank.

All-in, it took me 2-3 minutes and I just turned the Bronco around on the street, because it was facing the wrong way to access the rear, and I had glorious cold as-Ford A/C again!

Notes:
The 2.7 belts are not the same. Fortunately, I have the 2.3 and the A/C is all this belt does! Drove perfectly fine without A/C and no, I didn't notice any extra horsepower.
Stupid easy.

Any idea what caused it to fail? Was it rubbing on something?

I can't remember the last time I had a belt fail on a vehicle.

Due to the extremely sensitive nature of my own stupidity, I will not disclose exactly what caused the failure. 😂

It was definitely rubbing on something and I have no idea for how long. It began rubbing somewhere between Miami and California. The weather was cold, so I didn't discover it until after west Texas, but it's my best guess since I didn't use A/C until then.

There's another thread about this where @Ducati1098 turned me onto this tool instead of the $250-400 Ford recommended tool. I just thought we could use a simple all-in-one post about it.

I changed both belts on my 2.3 w/o any special tools. Eazy peezy, once you figure out how. A/c belt is stretched over the pulley very very slowly. A spring loaded idler pulley maintains tension on the alternator belt.

Good info. I picked up a spare for each belt after I read about someone losing the alternator belt after a puddle of some sort. I drive through all kinds of crap so figured better safe than sorry. Hoping to use the zip tie method if I ever have a need to put the belts on. Although I just realized I never thought to include something in my kit to crank the engine over slowly. I'll have to check my tool kit and see if it has what I need.

This tool makes it as quick as a little over half a turn on the crank.

I've had the same torque wrench for many years as well. Occasionally after a rotation I check it by using one of my techs "Snap-On" fancy ones. :ROFLMAO: Works like a champ.

Sweet, glad to see the replacement is easy. Also love how there is an "essential" accessory belt for the W/P and alternator and an "auxiliary" for the AC pump.

Some of my older rigs's belts truly lived up to the serpentine belt name lol.

Ok I went ahead and picked up the remover/Installer tool. Super cheap and compact. So I figure it will be good to have if it makes it easier.

Especially if I lose the Alt belt, I won't have to cut the a/c belt to replace it.

Well that settles it. I see the Motley supplemental tools for the Bronco roll up kit comes with this tool. So I'll order tomorrow.

Whatever happened to the ol' pry bar on the tensioner pulley? Or a flat head screwdriver on a running engine? Bunch o' newfangled crap!

I'm not that old, but I've definitely used a pry bar to replace a belt

No tensioner pulley on the stretchy belt.

Gotta love that running VW belt swap video, though, haha
