what rail carrier? there is a hotline for CSX that has great info and allows you to track the railcar as it moves to its destination and even tells you when it is offloaded

Call 800-235-2352

Press 1 for weight
Enter car initial using the letters on your phone keys (listen for instructions if needed) press #
Enter car number using keypad, press #
It will ask for the next car number press ## to skip that
Then the computer it will read the most recent checkpoint where that specific rail car has passed.

Then if you want to track the location on the map go to:

www.bnsf.com/bnsf-resources/pdf/ship-with-bnsf/maps-and-shipping-locations/bnsf-network-map.pdf

Sometimes your car may sit in one location for a day or more, then other times it will move through multiple checkpoints in the same day.

-speak the car numbers
-say "done"
-await response

This system is notoriously bad at understanding you when you give your railcar's initials. If you cannot get it to understand you, just follow the alternate instructions given above by @Landvalue

If your keying it in don't forget to include the letter position after the number corresponding to the letter for instance TTGX is 81 81 41 92 if you add pound at the end of each string the response is faster.
