I guess I don't understand what your question is? You can't measure current if you bypass the BMS. Are you thinking ground is ground so how does that matter? Ground is also a path that carries current and current can be measure by an induction loop around a conductor. The Ford older BMS sensor was literally a loop and went around the ground wire.

I appreciate the reply, but it doesnt answer the question; why is the counting of whatever different when the ground is terminal or frame point? Ground is ground. I will have to accept it's a chicken or egg situation.

Probably a case of my wife's usual answer; "don't ask because you wouldn't understand the answer."

Tom
Because the BMS sensor is on the negative terminal (that little black box that sticks straight out). If you ground straight to the post you bypass it and it can't count the amps.

Battery will still charge. Just the BMS can't see it because you went around it.

I guess my question was about battery state and tender operation then. I thought battery state was determined by measuring battery voltage and a tender didn't care whether the amp flow was in or out ...

If amps are flowing out to your tender something bad has happened.

Your right about a battery tender connected straight to a battery and the battery tender will work fine connected with or without the BMS. The battery tender doesn't need to know about the vehicle.

It's the vehicle computer system that needs additional information since voltage drops happen through the system so getting a battery voltage isn't so simple with multiple computer all drawing current. IF you want to control how much current the alternator needs put out you need to know the how much current is being asked for and the charge state of the battery. That's a lot to know if you only have voltage to work with.

In the old days, alternators were controlled purely by voltage and adding water to batteries was a necessary evil.

Very good B6G video from a few years ago.

BTW, I just use a NOCO 1A trickle when it sits for extended periods or ~weekly topping off.
Slow and Steady wins the race...🐢

I have a 2023 WildTrak Sasquatch, 2.7L EcoBoost V6, 10-speed automatic. I have these 2 battery maintainers. I may have to leave my Bronco in a heated garage for a couple of months this winter. Which one of these maintainers would you prefer to use?

2. EDITED TO SAY I HAVE 5 AMP Battery Tender. I use the same Deltran battery tender. IMO, best on the market. I have used them for over 30 years on everything from trucks, show cars, motorcycles, farm tractor, lawn equipment. ALL our vehicles are plugged in 24/7....they are always ready to roll and it extends battery life. I run the connector-plug out through the grill (may see in photo, driver's side above the push bar).

I use both the CTEK and Battery Tender chargers, both work well, but I find the Batter Tender is more suited to charging in a garage as it tends to rust when exposed to moist air that you might find in a car port or charging a vehicle in the driveway (even with the charger under the hood and the hood closed).

I use a BatteryMINDER brand trickle charger.
I've only had it a short time.
I read a fair amount of reviews at various forums where guys swear by them.
They recondition the battery while charging , thereby extending its life considerably.

It depends on which model Battery Tender. The one the OP shows will rust. Mine is encased the same as the CTEK.

I use the one in the photo as recommended by Deltran technician. I have used these (and currently) on: Bronco, F150, Yukon, Mercedes Sprinter, Mopars. Works on all of them. They are all plugged in 24/7 while not in use.
