Hello forum,

I'd like to achieve a more utilitarian look for my build. Came across a perfect example of what I had in mind. Want to suck the tires in more and steel wheels.
  • The example bronco is a Black Diamond with a 2” level kit and 315/70/17 Nitto trail Grapplers on stock steel wheels
  • My rig is a Badlands with the Sasquatch package
Question: Can I put this exact wheel and tire combo on my rig to achieve the same look? Does anyone know any reason why there would be a problem?

Thank you in advance!

While it may physically fit, I personally would not run 315s on a 7.5 inch rim. The wheels will fit your vehicle fine though.

The BD steelies are an inch narrower and have 20mm more offset, so they will be much more tucked in than the Sas combo, and you will probably have some rubbing issues (and some fender flare overhang).

I’d like the same, but the 7.5” width is really too narrow. I like the steelies too. I’ve looked around for similar wheels, but haven’t found any. The hot rod crowd has wheel specialists that can weld a wider rim on the wheel face. Not sure it’s worth it, but I’d like to know if you find anything.

The tires will rub but I'm sure you can find a way to make them not. They would look good!

If you are looking to tuck the wheels in and want to maintain height, then you'll need to sacrifice the width of the tire. As was mentioned above, the BD steel wheels have a 7.5" wide rim. You might want to consider a 255/85R17.

I pick up a used set of Black Diamond wheels on Friday. Mounting will be done Saturday. Talked to Les Schwab and they said no problem mounting the 315/70R17 to that 17x7.5 rim. They said it would take a lot to lose a bead and they do it more often than that you might think. That's in regards to everyday driving, long road trips, with regular off roading. No MOAB rock crawling here.

BUT in the future (when these tires are ready for replacement) I'm looking at 35x11.50R17. Those are rated for a 7.5" rim.

You’re a lot more likely to lose a bead on a tire that’s too narrow for the wheel than loose a bead on a tire that’s a bit “too wide” for the wheel.
Back in the day we ran 12.50 15s on 7-8” wheels all the time with no problems off-road. I have rolled 7.50 16 off of 8 inch rim more than once.
Of course now you rarely see a “skinny” tire off-road.

I had this thought exactly when I placed my order!! I would LOVE those steelies on my non-squatch badlands. I fully intend on taking those ugly jeep wheels off first thing, and mounting my 285 stock ko2's to the black steelies! Then I'll sell the badlands wheels to someone to cover the cost.

I haven't found one picture on Google of the steelies on a BL... BET IT WILL LOOK AWESOME!

Agreed, love the utilitarian look and a more narrow tire. The bonus is it should help keep crap off the side of the bronco.

I'll update the photos here Saturday night. The 35x12.5's should look fine. BUT I do plan on 35x11.50 when the time comes for new tires.

Here's the only photos I've found of what we are talking about (besides what posted on this thread already)

35x11.5x17 is a much better option for a 7.5" wheel. A 315 is just too wide for that wheel. Yeah people run them. But just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Another option would be the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss in 255/85-17. Not quite a 35 but fills out the wheel well quite nicely.

Of course now you rarely see a “skinny” tire off-road.

For me, back in the day was running hard rubber tires like buckshot mudders that would rot before the tread wore down too much. Now tires have much softer compounds and don't tend to wear well when on overly skinny rims. Fine for off road, but most people want to get the full life out of the tires on the street as well. The taller sidewalls of the 15s probably helped as well.
