You could always pedal your way to get assistance......or perhaps stow the spare in the cargo area. Or buy the sport and racks that go in the cargo area or the Yakima racks that mount to the roof. Lots of options. I think I would go with an extension. Your hitch has a pretty decent tongue capacity. I really can't see it being overloaded by bicycles.

Ya know, you do bring up a good point. Just do it! Get the rack with the extension. The only options I will consider due to the weight of the bike and the fact I ride them often are the hitch options. I plan to take the spare off. That should help.

The hitch manufacturers make extensions for the receivers. Is that what you are talking about? That is the route I would go

Yes, they do! I think the one I tried was made by Yakima. (6") Rocky Mount voids the warranty if an extender is used on their hitch. Even though I watched a YouTube of a guy who had a longer hitch on the back of his RV, resulting in several failure points along the channel mounts. Rocky Mount sent him a replacement as a one off, never to be repeated because extenders result in more torque and more flex.

Do you need a spare? No, until you do.

I think I'd take my chances. There are ways to mitigate torque and flex but that may be my inner redneck coming through.

Get lighter bikes and keep the spare…you need it, and it completes the iconic look.
Also, try another rack. My Thule works with the spare, you just can’t fold it up.

Not going to happen, but thanks for the suggestion anyway. eMTB's are not light.

Is that why they sell them 🤔🤔🤔

Nah, you don’t need a spare tire. Might suck if you ever get a flat though.

mountain biker and triathlete here. definitely for you and me (no reason to ask people who don't live that lifestyle), it's worth taking the spare off. My F150 took a swing-away rack easy or I could just hang the bike over the tailgate on a specially made mat. As much as we take the bike on and off the rack, it takes priority. A phone now goes farther than many things. Of course, we would put the spare on to go off-roading or vacationing. The guys yelling no prolly couldn't jog a mile.

Put the spare in a basket on the roof, looks like you have the hard top.
