Can someone help me understand GVWR? What is the target number? I read for an Light SUV, its under 6,000lbs? So at the highest Est. curb weight of 5320, you only have 680lbs of cargo/passengers capacity? I think they use 150lbs for passengers, so you could only have 4.5 passenger and no gear to stay under GVW? This is worse case...but does this make sense, am I wrong on this?
Wrangler 4-door curb weight is 4,449lbs, so the Bronco is a pig!!!

Built Ford Tough isnt just a slogan...it is a mantra and all Ford vehicles are overbuilt in structural areas because of it.

GVWR in reality doesnt matter to people on a daily basis. it is a legal requirement to put it on the doors and then it helps classify vehicles for sizing and emissions and safety and everything else. Once a PASSENGER vehicle leaves the manufacturer it doesnt really matter anymore. AS a commercial vehicle it still has sway.

For comparison, the 4Runner weighs 4700-4800 pounds and has a GVWR of 6300.

So we don't know what GVWR Ford is aiming for? I read on another thread that payload is 1370lbs? I have not seen any data sheet with that on it, but that would result in a 6,690 GVWR on a 4-door. That seems like a good overhead, but if they are saying you can't add a roof rack bc of GVW issues, they must be trying to have a lower GVWR limit.

The GVWR is going to change for each version of the vehicle depending on doors, engines, suspension...

From a regulation standpoint they need to keep a certain % of their builds within certain specs to qualify the vehicle as a X sized vehicles and Y emissions. From there there are formulas for how much penalties or credits ford gets based upon emissions and vehicle foot print etc...

this is all non-consequential to an end buyer for personal use.

Once you own it and use it for personal use none of the GWVR matters anymore. well unless something goes wrong and you are way over it, then you cant sue Ford saying they made it poorly. Then its on you.

your comment deserves a little editing or clarification in places:

It is not "all non-consequental to an end buyer for personal use."

The SAE will test and certify the GVRW and towing ability. Google SAE J2807. Exceed the GVRW at your own peril. You have voided your warrantee. You will be held liable for any accidents that may occur, including occupents, other vehicles including the driver, its occupants and vehicles or property. God forbid that there is disabilty or death involved. The numbers can get real big, real fast. Numbers with six zeros behind them are not uncommon these days.

Your insurance company may deny your claim. You will be found to have been operating in an unsafe condition. You do not want to be here with an elevated blood alcohol.

The above also applys to suspension modifications. There is a reason that those modified 4WD's are towed to the trail head.

Some good news, The Sasquatch suspension will be expected to be certified.

Pictures of mishaps will likely be taken by the police and the adjuster. Door labels, suspension bits, trailer hitches, lots of pictures. They will be reviewed closely by attorneys and their engineers.

Yes there can be consequences and you are right, "then it's on you."
