After two years since my initial order, my Bronco Wildtrak has finally been issued a VIN and a build week in March and I'm stoked about it. After I'm able to do some shakedown runs locally in Appalachia, I intend to disappear into the wilds of Nevada and Idaho for a prolonged period of time in late spring or summer for off roading, mountain biking, and fly fishing. I'm going to have the hard top with roof rails, and I'll mount my ancient Thule square bars to the factory rails. I'm pretty sure I'll need a short hitch extender for my bike rack. Does anyone have any idea where I can carry extra gasoline? I have seen one set-up with jerry cans or some other jerry can-like container mounted to the side of the Bronco, but it appears to me that it might require a non-Ford roof rack system. I'm thinking maybe of looking for a can that I can just strap to the spare tire with a couple of cam straps. Suggestions appreciated.

There's some great options out there that essentially strap around the spare tire. The name escapes me, but @broadicustomworks has one and can probably chime in.

I just carry a 5-gallon can in the back.

Here's one option, which is similar to what I mentioned above but not the exact same:

Thank you. That looks like an excellent option. I changed my google search terms from "bronco jerry can holder" to "bronco spare tire rack" and found this: https://americanadventurelab.com/product/mass-spare-tire-platform-stp/

It looks like it would work nicely, and with the small rack on top there is a perfect place to haul muddy shoes and wet gear.

For those of you who have never used the Rotopax before, you just need to be made aware that you need to burp them occasionally, when the temperature is getting hot and going up elevations. Legally they can't be vented when carrying gas. But here in Texas if I was on the road, I just wouldn't tighten all the way. If you don't they will distort and bubble.

If you look at the red one you can see it starting to bloat:

This looks like an awesome setup. Are you confident the apparatus won't rotate around the tire? I'm guessing the ratchet strap renders it pretty stout. Your lynx photo is outstanding by the way.
There are "teeth" that bite into the rubber to prevent any movement. It has a start the circumference of the tire and two more around the barrel. She's solid thus far.

and thanks! the lynx are always a treat to come across

I love the look of this. Can the rear towers holding the Rotopax be installed independently of the roof rack? My 78-inch Thule crossbars require that I use the factory roof rails and I really can't deviate from this because the items I carry often require every bit of the 78".

To maximize range off-road run 93 octane ethanol free gas. You’ll get 4-5% more range.
