These are great tires but what would push me away is how heavy they are. Just a lot more rotating weight to stress bearings etc. What are all of your thoughts on that?
It's a trade-off.

Heavier tires typically (but not always) have sturdier construction. Falken has beefy 3-ply sidewalls on their off-road oriented tires in the Wildpeak line, which means more protection while on the trail. If you are the type that is constantly rubbing their sidewalls against rocks, Falken has an awesome offering for you. BUT, the sidewall construction obviously adds to the weight, which decreases fuel economy and adds to the stress on components.

Goodyear absolutely prioritized weight for the Goodyear Territory MTs. Those tires are designed to be factory OEM tires sold to Ford, GM, Toyota, etc. The one thing the manufacturers care about right now is hitting their MPG targets, and lighter tires help them do that. But, the tradeoff is you end up with a "squishier" tire that may not hold up quite as well over time or off-road against the rocks. That's part of the reason why you see many dedicated off-roaders immediately swap the factory tires, and why we've seen several people change out their Goodyears around the 20,000 - 30,000 mile mark rather than the more typical 50k - 60k mark.

List of 315/70R17 tires which really emphasizes just how light Goodyear made these tires...
  • Goodyear Territory MT - 57 lbs
  • BFG KO2 - 65 lbs
  • General Grabber A/Tx - 66 lbs
  • Toyo Open Country A/T3 - 66 lbs
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - 69 lbs
  • Nitto Ridge Grappler - 70 lbs
  • Micky Thompson Baja Boss M/T - 70 lbs
  • Micky Thompson Baja Boss A/T - 71 lbs
  • General Grabber X3 - 73 lbs
  • BFG KM2 - 73 lbs
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T4W - 75 lbs
  • Falken Wildpeak R/T - 76 lbs
  • Nitto Trail Grappler - 77 lbs
  • Falken Wildpeak M/T - 80 lbs
For me personally, I live in southern New England which doesn't have a lot of off-roading. Which means I have to travel farther than I care to admit to have fun. It also means I care more about MPG than most off-roaders would... so I try to keep my weight on the low side. In order to do so, I tend to stick with tires that have narrower tread width, largely because they have lower weights and lower road resistance:
  • A/T4W - 35x12.50R17 = 78 lbs
  • A/T4W - 35x11.50R17 = 68 lbs
I would buy the 35x11.50R17, probably would never buy the 35x12.50R17.

Dang. 10 lbs for 1” width. Thats a big deal. 35x11.5 is a great size too. I’ll definitely be considering these. But, I really think I’ll end up with the Toyo RT Trail…just TBD if I save enough pennies to re-gear for 37 or not.

I am considering these tires, particularly a C-rated 285/75R17 when they become available. However, according to the size chart from Falken’s website, the C-rated tire weighs .5 pounds MORE than the equivalent E-rated. Am I looking at this correctly? Does this seem unusual?

Nice 3-ply sidewalls. Probably my next tire.

woah. 67# for 285/75/17
That was the number I was curious about. My Toyo AT3 are 59# in the same size, 67# is the same as the Kenda 35x10.5R17.

Which sidewall design did you go with? Just tough to tell in the picture, but it looks like the less aggressive one?

Here's the side wall. Mostly used for beach and powerline cruising. Only rocks this is crawling over is when wife steals it to go to mall and hits a curb. Wanted Falkens cause the factory sucked in the snow. This profile was recommend by Zekes Custom Auto in Dighton.

The Toyo AT3 in the 35x12.5 Load range C is listed at 59lbs. That’s the closest I can find to the stock SAS Goodyears.

That was the number I was curious about. My Toyo AT3 are 59# in the same size, 67# is the same as the Kenda 35x10.5R17.

I want 20's and the 35x11.5x20 is 64.5 lbs. so not too bad imo
