It's a trade-off.These are great tires but what would push me away is how heavy they are. Just a lot more rotating weight to stress bearings etc. What are all of your thoughts on that?
Heavier tires typically (but not always) have sturdier construction. Falken has beefy 3-ply sidewalls on their off-road oriented tires in the Wildpeak line, which means more protection while on the trail. If you are the type that is constantly rubbing their sidewalls against rocks, Falken has an awesome offering for you. BUT, the sidewall construction obviously adds to the weight, which decreases fuel economy and adds to the stress on components.
Goodyear absolutely prioritized weight for the Goodyear Territory MTs. Those tires are designed to be factory OEM tires sold to Ford, GM, Toyota, etc. The one thing the manufacturers care about right now is hitting their MPG targets, and lighter tires help them do that. But, the tradeoff is you end up with a "squishier" tire that may not hold up quite as well over time or off-road against the rocks. That's part of the reason why you see many dedicated off-roaders immediately swap the factory tires, and why we've seen several people change out their Goodyears around the 20,000 - 30,000 mile mark rather than the more typical 50k - 60k mark.
List of 315/70R17 tires which really emphasizes just how light Goodyear made these tires...
