The varied opinions on this are like oil and water- its crazy.

They are super dangerous and need alot of care and caution when being used- same as a winch.

I have been off-road and rock crawling for 35+ years and besides a winch, the Hi-Lift has probably been the most used tools on my rigs. But I think that applies more to the hard core side of the sport.

Someone else noted they could quickly do alot of damage to a newer vehicle and thats spot on. Weight the options- the newer off-road jacks, although expensive, may serve you better.

Whatever jack you choose you be careful. I have been wheeling for along time and learned many things along the way. I carry an integrated jack/jack stand and some 2x8 blocks as a base.
Solid axle vehicles are easier to lift as you can lift under the axle so suspension droop isn’t really a factor. For IFS its trickier. You hae to prevent the suspension from drooping or yiu waste the jacks stroke to over come it. With vehicle on the ground I take a ratchet strap and snug tight the control arm on the impacted tire so it can’t droop. Then proceed to lift. This way the jack’s lifting height is all applied and not wasted in suspension.

For some humor…yes that’s a Lego farm jack

Same category as traction boards, useful but more effort and hazard than I want to deal with. Most manufactures don't make sliders or bumpers that really work with high lifts anymore.

StinkyFab has sliders that have notches for high lifts front and rear.

Yes and no, the notches are a gimmick. High lift is the worst jack to use to change a tire and that is what those notches are for. When offroading you need to be able to put the jack in the most stable location, while stuck (rocks, sand, etc) and not damaging the body when it comes down.

I tried to find a picture of a high lift being used to help get over an obstacle but everyone stacks rocks now... So like a good troll I went to https://www.facebook.com/hiliftjacks

We use to use them in the sand at the pismo dunes but then the kenetic rope showed up. Hell I still have my wheel high lift adapter in the garage, talk about a lot of effort to get an RV out. You actually jack at a 45 degree angle so it slowly pushes you forward out of the holes.

Then you have these idiots jacking a steel bar that could shoot the jack out.

Here we go! That slider is designed for a high lift! But I would have pulled cable long before I got out and spent 20 minutes messing with a high lift.

Last time I used mine was to move a shed and all you made fun of me for not using a winch...

🤷‍♂️ It ain't why I bought 'em, but @StinkBug are they a gimmick?

Personally, I hate Hi-Lift jacks and don't find them to be useful on the trail. They are dangerous, and difficult to use. I stopped carrying one many years ago. That said, I wouldn't call slots that make it possible to use one a gimmick. Without the slots there's zero chance of getting the jack to do anything on a ramped surface. We designed our sliders to be far enough from the body for good protection on the trail, with the added benefit that a hi-lift will also have clearance from the body. They are functional jacking points and I've personally tested them, even though I despise those jacks. Other people like them and carry them, so why not cut the holes so people can actually use them if they want?

I have a hilift for pulling fence posts. It's never been in or near my bronco.

I use it if I need it and have been since the 80's. It is like any other multi tool. It does not do any one thing as great as a purpose-built tool. It replaces many. I've used them as side come along when 2 winches are already strapped to a vehicle. I've used them to get out of mud but jacking up a truck and "pushing it off the jack to get out of ruts. I have used them to lift vehicles to work on (I suggest securing with a winch and rocks as this is very dangerous). And I once used the body of two jacks as makeshift control arms to get my lifted 82 bronco out of the woods after snapping a control arm. If you were trying to remove a tire you need to chain the suspension, so it lifts easier, especially on longer suspension travel rigs. Safe they ain't, useful, I have proven they are.

As for finish and upkeep, if you use it, it will get corrosion on it. I squirt the pins and mechanism before every adventure off highway. I pressure wash it with the undercarriage upon return. As stated above poor pin engagement is an accident waiting.

What did you use to mount them on the roll bar. What thread size is that ? Do you have a source for parts. Just picked-up a new unused hl485 for $70. Using it also with a lift mate to lift a Tesla to put jacks under it

As ofthers have said, no jacking points. I wouldn't use a high-lift unless I used their Lift-Mate. I like bottle jacks but they only work if you can get under your vehicle. If you can't that's where a farm jack with the Lift-Mate would be handy. It's also a good way to lift one wheel so you can put something under it for more traction.

You can use the front recovery point on a stock bronco if you have this device called,
"jeep needs sam-3" , if you sport an aftermarket rear bumper with a recovery loop it could work there too. Yes I carry a bottle jack too, but it's useless if you can't get under there, trust me.
