I have ‘25 2.7 OBX I bought last November and I am at 4800 miles on it and have not done my first oil change, I was planning on doing it right before I got to 5k but I am now going to be taking it on a 800mile round trip road trip next week. We were planning on taking my wife’s Blazer but we found it has a radiator leak and wouldn’t be able to repair in time for the trip.

My question is will it be fine to push the oil change until after the trip or should I try and get it done beforehand? We leave for the trip next Thursday
Change it.

Do it now. Full synthetic of some type.

Definitely fine either way
it’ll be fine. Just check the level to be sure you’re not low if you haven’t had to add any so far.

Change it! I changed the oil in my 2026 2.7ltr at 1,045 miles and the oil looked awful. It was thin and blackish-green in color. Also smelled like some fuel got in there. This is expected, but I was surprised by the condition of the factory oil. The factory filter was also unique. It had plastic caps on the top and bottom of the element, but the Motorcraft replacement cartridge filters don’t have the same plastic caps. (Still a mystery to me.)

Side note: Ford also updated the drain plug, as compared to a 2022 2.7ltr.

Doing that early oil change will get your bearings and rings to 300k miles vs the 250k miles if you change every 10k.
What is that statement based on? I did the first oil change on my new 02 Ranger 4.0 SOHC at 5K miles and every 20K miles after that. That was determined with oil analysis on Valvoline synthetic oil. It also has a micron bypass oil filter (a must for extended oil change interval). It now has 312K miles on it and the rings and bearings are in great condition. It uses no more oil than it did when new and it is as strong as it was when new.

I also have a micron bypass oil filter on my 2.7L powered Bronco but will change the oil when the oil minder gets to 0% left, mainly because of the turbos. I did do the first oil change at 3,000 miles because I didn't have the micron filter installed yet.

Changed my Bronco Limited first time around 1600 kms ( 1000 miles) and every 6000 kms 3600 miles since. This engine is like a swiss watch inside. Gunk or contaminants and fuel dilution can really mess up your day. Engine 25000 oil change $60... do the math. Also tire rotation for sure by 5k.
These tires can wear unevenly quckly. 3-4 k for a new sey.

The motor oil related urban myths are alive and well.

Everyone is entitled to change their oil as frequently as they want. As a test engineer at Ford Aerospace in the late 70s and early 80s, I can tell you doing something without evaluating the final long term results proves little. It may prove it does not hurt to change oil frequently but it does not prove it extends the life of the engine compared to longer oil change intervals.

As I stated before, I have real life results showing that extended oil change intervals does not hurt a normally aspirated engine, at least to 312K miles. Does that make that true for all engines? No, it does not. I also used a micron bypass oil filter which makes a big difference.

I am by no means telling anyone to run their oil longer. However, the quality of oils today, especially synthetic, allows you to go beyond the 3K to 5K oil change frequency. To each his own.

I agree with all the advice to do your first OLF sooner than later, especially being over 6 month. I'm at 85,000 miles on the 2.7, have mostly kept to 5,000 mile intervals and all is well with my 2021 OBX.
