I went in to get a spare key fob cut and it took longer than buying the Bronco!

They want to see your ID, registration and temporary plate number in order to request the key code from Ford.

Include wait time and coffee breaks and 1.5 hrs later I got a spare key fob cut to match the 2 originals.

Glad to have a 3rd key fob but was painful!

Just think if someone was able to walk in and get a spare key made for a vehicle they don’t own. It’s all about preventing vehicle theft

Try as I might, I can't envision a thief stealing my Bronco, driving it to a dealership and asking to have a spare key made.

Ask your selling dealer for the key number, anywhere with the equipment can cut the key with the number. Mine took 3 minutes to cut, $10 cash at a Chevrolet dealer. I purchased my new key online and programmed myself in a few minutes.

Its not the dealership that requires all the info it is Ford that does. Also the dealership only gets so many key code requests per year.

I just opened my fob for the first time, and noticed that the mechanical key is only partially cut. I assume it is supposed to only be cut halfway through the blank?

Yes mine was as well. Most likely designed in that manner. Probably a space and strength design. Not cutting through the blade allowed for torsional strength without sacrificing pin depth.

Probably not but could you envision them walking up and snapping a pic of your VIN and plate, walking into a dealer and getting a key made and coming back late at night and driving off with it??

I could.

I was under the impression that if you had two original “keys”, you could program/activate a third “key” by placing it in the “indent’’ in the center console and by following the procedure in the owners manual.

Is this not correct? My 2000 Expedition, 2015 Explorer and a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Ltd were capable of doing this.
