The nut is recessed in the top hat...what tool do I need to hold the strut piston and loosen that top nut at the same time?

(I have a spring compressor to remove tension)

No luck yet today. That earlier pic offset wrench was slightly too big. Had to order an 18mm offset wrench, don't seem to exist in my local stores. What a PITA this is becoming.

Also removed the rear lower shock bolt by hand 💪. That was... difficult.

A vice grips holding the shaft with a rag to protect the shaft is what I had to do. If you have the right tools (offset wrench) you should be able to key an allen to hold the shaft

You are probably going to need some heat on that nut. Be careful not to ruin the rubber in the hat.

It's not an allen like many others are. It's a 5/16ths post and the nut is recessed. I hate it :)

Replacement coilovers ftw. Lol

Also, my air impact couldn't remove the rear lower bolts but it was cake with a cheater bar.

I always use breaker bar before impact because impacts can do a lot of damage in no time.

Thinking back your right. Still the same though, had to use a vice as I didn't have an offset wrench

Just be careful with that style of spring compressor! I did find that if you are upgrading your springs (I went from stock to the Eibachs), that style would not compress the new springs enough to reassemble the strut.

Well that would be ...quite the pickle. These are stock badlands struts and springs I want to reassemble.

It will work.
I used the same style.
Just be mindful of them as you use them, make sure you tighten evenly, they are mostly directly across from each other, and all that jazz.
I've used the same style of compressor on a dozen sets of springs for various jobs and no issues.
I even bought a floor-style compressor that looked like it was going to be the best thing since sliced bread but proved to not be nearly as useful as the simple ones.
