I used to carry a 5-gal steel jerry in the bed of my tacoma. The carrier was bolted to the back of the utility box at the front of the bed. I never worried about the fire risk because it was well away from potential impact areas in a crash. That truck even got rear ended while parked in my driveway by an old girlfriend who drove there drunk one night. Scuffed my steel bumper slightly and destroyed the whole front of her little car.

All I can think about when I see fuel cans hanging off the backs of rigs is rear end collisions followed by infernos.

yup. That’s it. Nothing crazy but it’s a loooooong day. Honestly I’m not sure if trailers are permitted on that trial. I can’t remember.
There are no trailer restrictions on that trail. A trailer is considered a vehicle so it reduces the number of powered vehicles at each campsite.

I lead four Landcruisers and a 4Runner into The Maze a few years ago and I would not allow trailers so we could use two campsites for the six vehicles. Plus, I did not want to have to deal with a trailer in the rough areas.

We went to Doll House, The Maze Over Look and was going to go up to Horse Shoe Canyon to see the Pictograph but the 4Runner did not carry the 10 gallons of extra fuel I requested and we had to go get more fuel for him. We still went to Horse Shoe Canyon from the West side.

Years ago I went into the Doll House with an 86 Ranger with a 4 wheel pop up camper, great trip. Looped out to the south and came out at Hite. Had to camp there to wait for the gas station to open, I think that tank held 14 or 15 gal and it took all of it. Sounds like @gbub knows of which he speaks, 10 gal might be right.

Anything mounted to a hitch mount will rattle and sway like crazy no matter what kind of anti rattle clamp you use, especially with a swing arm and 15 gals.

I am holding this idea in my brain if I ever need that much extra capacity. Use one of these, horizontal across the roof rack with a pivoting bracket replacing the axle so it can be pivoted upright when in use.. Remove and store the hose so it doesn't get dirty and replace with a plug or valve. $150

Steve - what a blast from the past! Is that ad from the back of a Popular Mechanics or Popular Science magazine? Cartwright hasn't sold that hitch in 30 years! And that price! I wish.

There are a lot of articulating off-road hitches available on the market.

An issue with mounting heavy things high up such as on a roof rack is that it seriously changes the vehicle's center of gravity. Not a huge deal for on road travel but can become a danger when off roading.

I don't know what the ad was published in. It was simply the only picture I could find on the web a while ago when I was looking for info to post to explain the setup I had to someone on another forum.

They haven't made Packmule trailers in quite some time either. I bought mine used nearly 40 years ago. Att they were still in production on a limited basis by the son that had taken over dad's welding shop (Helder Mfg).
I still use the trailer to this day

I did extend the tongue on it as my 83 V8 swapped FJ60 was wider than the Jeeps it had been designed for, I got tired of busting out my tail lights.

Yeah over the years I have seen the various types of articulating hitches come and go on the market. I even have one of the newer types sitting unused out in my shop somewhere. Though the name escapes me and I guess "newer" might not apply as it is probably 20+ years old at this point.

That’s a new one to my eyes. Thanks for sharing.
I just received these. I used a thicker ratchet strap but once on the wheel it is very solid. You could carry one of each side of the spare. I haven't done anything to the swing gate hinge and don't plan to -- I'll just remove the cans before I open the swing gate. Hopefully between hinge and latch the stock parts will deal with the extra weight ok.

Move your exhaust, do a body lift, put in a 20-gal tank in this space.
Not possible without seriously affecting ground clearance. Only 8 gal. (in a 4D) is practical, maybe 10 if fabrication cost and complexity are zero concern.

If you are still considering a swing hitch, this bicycle brand (Kuat) one is what I run (for bikes) and it's very quiet and sturdy. It's weight limit is fairly large at 250 lb, so 15 gal. plus some additional racking would be possible.

I wouldn't do any mod like this myself without maintaining full rear access.

Thanks. I have a list of all of these. The Rig’d version has the highest weight capacity & can be flip flopped to open driver or pass. Cheers! Thanks for sharing.
