I don’t think it’s illegal but the stickers definitely have useful information on them. There are other locations in a vehicle where the VIN is required to be displayed.

Before you rip those off, they do have a use. Insurance companies will snap a picture of them after an accident. Body shops reference them for exact paint codes, they're a quick and easy place to find curb weight, GVWR, tire PSI etc.
