I am doing the same thing this weekend. I have the hammer built brace installed already. I was going to use the mount I fabbed for my JK, but I decided it was too heavy and bulky. The new plan is to reinforce a wavian jerry can holder and add mounting brackets to it to fit up to the hammer built mounting holes. Which brings me to my question, What size bolts did you use to attach to the hammer built brace, and where did your source them?
Stainless steel 5/16-18 x 3/4 cap screws from Menards. I used all 8 mounting points on the Hammer plate!

I just seen that, they have always been sold out when I checked on them. $350 is a bit high but they look really nice.
Amen.
I was intrigued and looked it up.
Cool design but that price? Whoo!

Thanks, I don't know why, but I expected them to be metric.

I like this idea, and will look into making an aluminum Jerry can holder!

FYI, internet says: full Jerry can weighs approximately 40 lbs!

My can which I bought at a farm store is a Midwest brand and empty it weighs 9.5 lbs. 5 gallons of gas at 6 lbs a gallon is 30 so yeah right at 40.

Good spot for one. The weight will not affect the tailgate. Just don’t overbuild it. The weight of the mount shouldn’t exceed the weight of the can full.
Decided to build a Jerry can mount after not finding anything currently available. It's made out of steel and I will probably build one out of aluminum to cut down on the weight. It's mounted on a Hammer Built tailgate reinforcement plate and so far so good!
Mig? Tig? Stick?
Looks like somebody has a plasma cutter...

Just get an inexpensive mig or stick welder, and an angle grinder with cutting disk to cut the steel.

I have both mig and stick welders but neither weld aluminum đź‘Ž and I want to make one from aluminum!

I ordered this same tail gate reinforcement system for my Bronco now that I'm on 37s, but haven't heard word about it in over a week. I'm glad to see they do exist. Great job on the build as well.
Reach out to Tyson the owner of hammerbuilt, he is very knowledgeable and helpful. I don’t believe these are just sitting around stock in his warehouse. Mine was built to order and took 2.5 weeks to arrive. In a few weeks I am getting a rear bumper with swing outs so I will have the hammerbuilt mount and rotoplax add on with 2.5 gallon gas can for sale.

Got my Jerry can mounted. I used the Wavian mount I bought at Swiss Link. The mount is built to mount on the bottom, and isn't as rigid as I would like. So I added some metal on the back to mount to, and some stand-offs to clear the Hammer Built plate mount bolts. I also welded more of the joints and it is now very rigid, and not too heavy. Anyway here is a pic. Looks a lot like the original post by @Eljohno

Note: I used my old faded can that I used to carry on my JK.

I propose this thread get a new name. “Jerry Can Mount Build(s)”. Nice central location for all things Jerry can.

Forgot to talk about the strut. Be careful because the factory strut allows the tailgate to open too far and the can/mount will break the tail light. You can order a 28" strut off of Amazon. I got the one with 30 lbs of opening force, works perfectly.

I've done some Al Tig welding. My technique ain't very pretty.
Supposedly Al wire in a Mig spool gun works great. I've got zero experience with that.
https://sparkherd.com/welding/index2.html

Tig uses gas which is a different animal!

I get the most use out of my mig welder and for anyone wanting to weld I'd steer them towards a mig welder. Easier than a stick welder and not too expensive.

I'll be doing some welding for the bronco for sure!
