Looks like Sand Hollow. Love the smoke, he was probably having fun seeing what it would do. Sometimes tires heat up and then it just goes. (y) (y)

Scrubbing in his OEM tires…maybe he’s wanting to destroy them so he can get new tires?

Funny video - thanks!

Its rubber. Sure its mixed and formulated, but at the end of the day its mostly rubber. Also it appears to be a popular trail which means its full of rubber tracks and probably much worse. I dont really care for rock crawling, Im sure its fun for a bit. But without a constantly evolving mud hole or hill, there isnt enough to make a fun challenge, without failure meaning almost certain parts or body damage.

Unfortunately the parking structure at my local mall has an entrance exactly like that! Now I know I can take my Bronco there . . .

I'm aware of a principle that applies in other kinds of racing, and plausibly could apply here, that smoking the tires, in this manner, gets the tread surface slightly melted, and makes it stickier, leading to better traction.

Watching this video, it does certainly look to me like that is exactly what is happening. We see the cold tires just slipping, not getting nearly enough traction, and getting a grip only after they start smoking.

But you are certainly right on one point—this does get you closer to needing to replace the tires.
Not only plausible, but absolutely factual. Now, is it the smartest way to climb, no, but definitely a way to do it if you don’t want to air down for what ever reason. Heat makes the tire softer which aids in traction. Of course the downside is increased wear and black marks left on rocks. We never worried about tire wear when doing burn outs on the road as kids. Fun is fun!

Would a good running start get him up and over?

Looks like the driver in that video shouldn’t attempt it either.
Smoking the tires accomplishes little other than getting you closer to replacing them.
You must be a mall crawler instead of offroader. Warming up the tires makes them sticky so you get better traction

I think my pitch and roll guages have only seen a few degrees at this point. I'd love to see the guages on video while he's doing this. like 25 or 30 degrees it seems

“Warming up the tires” seems to have different meanings in your circle because what I saw on that video was stupidity. Now if he was at the drag strip, different story but I’ve been off roading for 30 plus years and never saw anyone intentionally do that on the trail, especially when rock crawling.
