When I first bought my Bronco (2.3L, 2-Dr) in November, the mileage range at fill up (with 87octane) was 320. I ran a little experiment with premium octane from multiple brands (Chevron, Shell & Valero) and after the last couple of full ups, my range fell to 285. It hovers there a little longer it seems, meaning I’ll drive a few miles before it starts ticking down. Has anyone experienced this before? Is it the fuel or is my equipment failing?

I’ve got the 2.3, I’ve seen a decline in fuel efficiency in the past month or so as well

Winter Blend gas. All my trucks do/have done the same.
Agree 100% my Dad worked for a refinery for 20 years and mentioned the switch to winter blend every year.

Yep, winter blend mixed with remote starting on cold mornings means my mileage has dropped from 16-17 down to 13-14. I looked at my range after I filled up the other day and laughed because it was the same as I used to get in my old '91 Bronco.

I’ve always watched my fuel economy closely (on all my vehicles) and I’ve never seen winter blend fuel affect my mileage as much as with my Bronco. Especially the discrepancy between indicated mpg and actual hand calculated mpg.

I saw a drop in my mpg as well. I suspected the fuel blend but after a tank of E0 it was the same. I assume now it is just the parasitic drag exacerbated by the colder temps.

It’s a big square block with oversized tires, and a very tiny engine, so any differences will be magnified on a vehicle like that. Whether winter fuel blends or driving habits, or letting your vehicle warm up more in the winter time – it can all affect your mileage.

I fill up my 2.7 with 93 octane (usually shell v power+). When I bought the Bronco in August I'd get between 410-420 miles of range. The last couple of fill ups its been 385ish.

MPGs also went down from 20.3 to 19.3.

You guys are always hilarious to read about all of these mpg discussions for a rolling brick off-roader. We proper 2 Dr guys fill up with whatever and have a posted range of around 245mi. Highway is more, yes, but it’s 245 on a good day.

Suck it up fellas, this ain’t a fuel efficient vehicle. That’s what you get with literally EVERY other SUV.

Let us wheelers have at least ONE or two toys to play with. Geez….. :)

You get more on the highway? My mileage drops like crazy on a long highway road trip. I’m lucky to get 200. That probably has a lot to do with me going way over the speed limit and 37’s though 😂

If you live in an area with Winter Blend gas, then you can expect an 8% hit to mileage due to the ethanol.

We see no difference here, because we use "winter" blend year round and have for a decade.

Winter blend fuels have a higher concentration of Butane in them. Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) also plays a factor in that it the measure of how a fuel evaporates at any given temp. Its a fine line. Ambient temp plays a role. I've lost about 1.5mpg from my normal 19mpg due to Much colder temps here in Indiana recently, warm up time etc.

You are right; my mileage has drastically dropped also. I know it can't be the 38's, lift, armor, 5.13 gears. The reason I get 10-11 MPG has to be the Winter blend.
