Man that sucks. With the wheel taking nearly all the impact I would suspect frame damage - bent or torn link mounts probably. Good luck.

I’m curious, did you have it in 4A? If not do you think it would have helped if you did? Unless it’s bone dry out I leave my truck in 4a pretty much all winter but I do wonder about how effective it would actually be in instances like that that, or what it’s doing to vehicle wear/fuel consumption…

Depends what OP means by "sliding." If they were trying to stop, 4A would not have mattered. If they were turning, then maybe in some instances, but generally 4a doesn't do a whole lot when there isn't any traction.

Also to your 4A question, it might use a little more fuel to leave it in 4A depending on how much the front axles are engaged, but it shouldn't cause any excess wear. Maybe slightly more because you're actually using it, but not to the point of damage like it would be if you kept it in 4H.

Well I guess I drew the short straw on this one haha just my luck but I get to say I was one of the first to get my bronco delivered and also one of the first to wreck one haha was my favorite vehicle I have ever owned up until this point having had it for a few months loved every second of it. Everyone was fine nobody injured except my pride but I took a square hit to the rear right tire sliding through an icy intersection and it looks like the bronco was built to take a solid hit at first looks nothing super serious is eminent except for a damaged wheel some dents a junk fender flare and some suspension components bent in the rear I'm hoping there isn't any hidden surprises like a bent frame but I guess we will see shortly and also see how readily available the parts are wish me luck! till then ill be "keeping my stick on the ice".

Well, I had mine for barely over a month, so join the club. My impression was that these are solidly built vehicles. My repair is taking over a month, but should finally be done at the end of January. I had to find another hard top, so, be happy. State Farm is fully covering the repair far beyond where I thought they would total it. Guessin' that's the Unicorn effect.

Very sorry to hear. I hope it gets fixed perfectly for you. My Bronco is also my favorite car ever (and I have had a LOT of them). Also with a home base in Michigan, it makes me wonder about my own tires. I've spent a significant time in my career working on anti-lock brakes, but I have learned that the tires are the most important consideration with winter driving. From what I've read, the BFG KO2s on my Badlands are a pretty good compromise albeit not true snow tires.

I feel like this false sense of security will be rudely wiped away when Bronco owners encounter another heavy truck or commercial vehicle for that better. Don’t get complacent guys.

Please stop with the picking apart the OP on "how" the accident happened. The Bronco isn't Superman, nor is it a trophy truck. Ice is an interesting condition to drive on, even for trained or professional drivers. Sometimes things just go wrong or we all make mistakes as humans. Any of you boys reading this gonna be running KOH in a couple of weeks? Didn't think so, but even those guys and gals will tear up some trophy trucks out in the sand and dust.

Feel bad for the OP, but thankful to him for swallowing pride and posting as a lesson or example to the Bronco 6G community. Maybe you would've or could've done things differently, but maybe not, so let's not dwell on speculation and just learn from whatever you care to take away from the thread.

The sas tires are pretty good on ice. GY submitted them for 3 peak rating.

I'm gonna start keeping a tally of people who ask "were you using 4 auto" as if it's actually gonna help in situations where 4wd is totally fuckin irrelevant...like stopping at an intersection

Unless you're running studded tires or chains, ain't no tire good for ice.

Winter rating is for loose to packed snow only.

There's many more crumbly bits on the front than on the side of a vehicle, so of course it looks worse. It's also designed to absorb energy and crumble.
