Lordstown Motors exits San Felipe 250 early, underestimates energy usage

Lordstown Motors recently entered its electric Endurance pickup truck in the SCORE San Felipe 250 race, only to have to drop out after stage one. Although the Endurance truck and its components withstood the elements, the Lordstown team admitted its pre-race estimates for energy consumption were wrong, and the EV prototype would likely not make it through stage two.

What if they pulled a coal-powered generator behind them?

That's essentially America's EV strategy going forward as we don't have sufficient electricity generation now or in the foreseeable future.

Edit: I meant "clean coal", for you environmentalists thinking I was talking about the older, dirty coal technologies.

Coal makes up 20% of US electricity production, same as nuclear, same as renewables. Natural gas is the primary source of energy in this country at the moment. Coal is dying and dying fast. And the current administration has made it clear developing green energy is a priority from infrastructure up. It's a bit bold to say that electricity from coal is America's current and long term strategy for EVs when it's divorced from reality.

Wish I could buy huge swaths of an industry and then regulate the whole industry towards what I owned.

I really wish people could understand its all about money and not saving the planet. It is hard to realize that something you have been taught since kindergarten is garbage.

would be an easy fix if we focused and invested heavily into nuclear power. Clean, sustainable energy and incredibly efficient in regards to the amount fuel needed for powering a city for 50+ years.

SMRs scale easily with increasing energy demand. New suburb? Drop another 100MW module into your plant.

Coal is dying because it is not profitable, even after trump neutered the EPA.

if you wanted to be more specific we can. The US is largely turning to be a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) consumer (and soon to be major exporter, unless Biden slows that down due to the horrific natural costs of extraction). However, it's unlikely that LNG will be the future growth due to the costs of extraction and environmental damage. Generally speaking, the US likes to offshore that sort of horrific land destruction on 3rd world nations (Hello Tesla battery "recycling" landfills in Africa!).

When LNG drops in volume, Coal will be the single easiest source to replace that lost production.

Hydro produces about 25% of our states energy (we sell the excess off to California so they don't have to burn coal) so we're a massive outlier of the country.

But most of the country looks more or less like this:

If you wanted more on LNG prospects for the country here's a great read:
