Sorry for the newb question, but I've never owned a vehicle with the cartridge style oil filter like on the 2.7 Ecoboost.

Our OBX just hit the 6k mark and I went to change the oil last night before we head out for a road trip this weekend. After I pulled the drain plug, I went to change the filter while the oil drained out. Then I realized I bought the wrong filter. All the stores were closed, so I put the old filter back in. My question: With the oil filter being so high on the engine, can it be changed without draining any oil?

TIA

I don't believe it is advised, but it should be doable. Might make a bit of a mess when you remove it though. Usually that style doesn't require you to drain the oil but they will suck up some oil and drop it all over the place if your not careful. May want to drain the oil into the 5qt you used to fill and swap it if possible.

Yes. Infact, the old filter is best removed prior to removing the drain plug. I would replace with new one ASAP however.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll get a new one swapped in before we head out of town.

What was wrong with the filter? The FL-2062A is a direct replacement for the FL-2062. They look a little different but function the same.

I didn't buy either of those. I made a mistake on a part number when placing an online order. Received a completely different style filter.

My Walmart stocks them for about $6.50 if you’re looking for one local. Same filter used in pickups,SUVs, and mustangs. Shouldn’t be hard to find on the shelf.

Lots of people just change the filter without changing the oil. You'll lose a quart or so. Just add back what you need to top it off afterward. Plenty of people use extended life oil and change the filter once or twice before a full oil change.
