On my B/D the front skid covers the engine oil pan but the 10r60 trans has a "compocrap" pan and is COMPLETLY uncovered, the designers must have thought since it sits a bit higher then the frame rails should be fine?

maybe that’s what it is. I dunno I mean it’s probably okay 90% of the time but ugh… just seems like something that could be improved on

Reports of cracked oil pans? Quite a few of us have been wheeling and scraping. If it’s an issue, surely there are reports of it by now.

... I want to know when a rock will be traveling at 50+ MPH, directly hitting my oil pan, on an off road trail? If it does, then i have much more bigger problem than cracking my oil pan, i should be worrying about why i am rolling down a cliff. ...
Wheel spin when climbing loose earth or gravel can easily produce those conditions.

I've seen small vehicles throw large rocks quite far when applying the skinny pedal, and stuff is ricocheting all over especially when it's the front wheels spinning.

good luck with the aftermarket oil pan on the 2.7 & 3.0 as one does not exist.

The 3.5 started out it's life with a composite oil pan. Ford changed it a metal oil pan on February 26, 2018.

To this day no one has made a metal oil pan for the early 3.5s

Just talking this out, not being mean spirited towards your post.

So BASF ran their own control test on a AL and their own composite oil pans, No Bias there I guess, Throwing rocks at each pan over 50 MPH up to -40 Celsius, and testing the durability? I want to know when a rock will be traveling at 50+ MPH, directly hitting my oil pan, on an off road trail? If it does, then i have much more bigger problem than cracking my oil pan, i should be worrying about why i am rolling down a cliff.

I really dont think these pans will survive survive the majority of the weight of the vehicle in a high centering event, just like an AL pan wouldn’t either. It may be a weight savings aspect only. I just dont see the benefits outweighing the cost savings. If it is not broke, dont mess with it.

I guess I’m an old man for not liking these Ultramid® B3ZG7 OSI oil pans. Apparantly this is the first replacement on the Coyote engines, swapping to a metal oil pan. I am glad that the 2.3 is still running a metal one. If I were to get the 2.7 or the 3.0, I would swap it out for an after market pan. Good luck with the plastic drain plug, everyone.

I've done about 2500 miles off road so far on trails rated 7+ and the factory armor has held up incredibly well so far.

It's got some gouges and stuff, but it hasn't collapsed and even the rock sliders can take the full weight of the vehicle dropping on a rock.

The oil pan is protected by being quite above your frame and is tucked up a bit behind the terribly designed cross members that will catch on any and every rock long before the pan gets hit.

You want to armor that area purely to get rid of those cross members anyways, because they're low and designed in a way that makes them grab instead of slide. Mine are beat to hell so far, but zero issues with the oil pan.

Black Diamond factory armor with an added Asfir trasmission skid plate is the way we went.
Also added their transfer case skid in place of the factory. It is a little larger than the factory.
We have not had it anywhere that tested it yet.

this is reassuring at least. I just feel like that composite pan and the tie rods are the two biggest weak points with this vehicle.

So with the factory armor I am led to believe the composite oil pan is exposed and can be damaged.

I know some of us like myself ordered the factory armor assuming it would be good enough to handle whatever was thrown at it.

If correct, I would be willing to pay a premium for a piece of armor that would better protect the oil pan while fitting in with the factory skids.

maybe if we drum up enough interest, my buddy @BAMF or one of these other fabricators would be willing to make something like this. What do you guys think?
Greenlane Off Road (Canada) has a full set of bolt-on, no drill body skid plates for $600 CAD.

A skid plate that covers these will go along way in keeping you from getting hung up on this crossmember brace. 😁

The tie rods are actually pretty solid.

I was snow wheeling through a patch of hard snow about 2-3' deep this winter and hit something in the snow going about 35 mph.

It was enough to jump the driver side of the Bronco a few feet into the air and bottom out the suspension hard enough to make a massive thud. I hit the MIC top.. tie rod was perfectly fine. Thought for sure it would've snapped. I am on stock 35s still so my geometry is factory. I think that makes a huge difference.
