What parts commonly break while off roading? What spare parts do you carry?

  1. Inner / outer tie rod
  2. Fuel pump (hearing a bit more about these failing?)
  3. Other parts?

Donā€™t worry about a fuel pump. It was early model 2.7ā€™s and not something easily replaceable in the field. If youā€™re stock then honestly nothing is prone to breakage unless you put your Bronco in a bind and continue pushing it. That being said, inner tie rod and a set of CV axles are what I carry on my wheeling trips. CV axles only because Iā€™m lifted and go on hard trails and travel with a dozen or so Broncos at times. Carry the tools to replace em too. For the tie rod itā€™s gonna be a 21 or 22mm wrench, a very large crescent wrench, a small hammer, and a pair of pliers and a long flat head screw driver.

I've broken nothing, I wheel body lift with 37 swampers on rock monsters. I do however wheel like the tie rods are weak points and 3 tries then winch... leave bravado at the house! I carry spare tie rods, a butt load of tools, tire plug kit as well as a patch kit. I run a compressor also.

I usually break while driving through the urban areas.

Also a break is good to take when you are around a 1/4 tank. Personally, I'm more of a break at half full kind of guy.

Good luck with your breaks!

Good intel. Thanks. I used to race the Baja 1K and had to do many field repairs.

Questions:

Anyone use one of those inner tie rod removal kits (from AutoZone) that comes with an adapter and tube that fits over the inner tie rod to make it easier to remove/install?

Any special tools needed to change a CV axle?

@Aonarch good tip on that tool kit. Didn't think about a gear puller.

@popo_patty which make/type of spare axles do you carry/recommend? Do you carry front only or do you carry both front and rear axles?

I'm looking at upgrading to 37s from 35s.

I'm off roading canyonlands and moab.

The Ford Performance axles are best bang for the Buck! I carry a set, only cost about $500 and are good piece of mind. Basically OEM. I donā€™t bother about the rear. Front is the weak link so it will likely break 1st

I broke a front driver's side axle right after this. It was fixed under warranty. I now run the Ford performance axles as spares.

Well, you don't have to worry about the fuel pump. Unless it's in bad shape.
