Ok, so there's a long story to this, but it boils down to - I'm looking for a phone mount.

I have an old iPhone XS that I'm leaving in the truck more or less permanently now. There is a small phone holder area just below the shifter, but I'm wanting to free that up for my carry phone. I have a 7MT (that affects the center console area significantly). I finally found a USB cable that isn't too long or too short, but the phone doesn't fit well in the cubby ahead of the shifter / under the HVAC area.

So looking for a holder that stays down low, near the shifter area -- not up on the dashboard or driver's side grab handle and definitely not anywhere in the windshield area.

Came across this one that looks like it would work - but not familiar with these mounts. Are they stable enough to keep it from flopping all over the place while going offroad?

https://www.tackform.com/products/ford-bronco-phone-mount-accessory-ready-grab-handle-m618

The XS does not have Magsafe magnets to hold it up, so it has to be a clip of some sort.

There was also this on Amazon, but leery of it
https://www.amazon.com/Stabilized-Compatible-Magnetic-wireless-dashboard/dp/B09NF7MVTK

That style holder would be nice, as it keeps the phone up and visible should I need to get at the screen for any reason... but it's not a requirement. In fact, thinking about it - it keeps the phone up and visible when I'm not in the Bronco. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if it were stolen but I'd not necessarily want to dare any of the locals with it either.

Another option would be one of those saddle bags that go on the grab handles, like this:
https://www.stickerfab.com/products...ford-bronco-2-4-door-car-interior-accessories
or
https://www.bartact.com/products/br...passenger-side-lower-area-bartact-pat-pending

That keeps the phone tucked away, but I'd have to fish it out if I need to unlock it for whatever reason.

A third option would be to throw a full molle panel at the passenger foot well

And a holster-style mount for the phone (there are dozens, just one for illustration)
https://www.amazon.com/IDOGEAR-Tactical-Universal-Smartphone-Compatible/dp/B0C8J1YPC8

That lets me mount the phone + other small things there, and the holster style makes it easier to get at if I need it without necessarily having to fish it out or advertise it's existence to the world.

I dunno - looking for what other folks have done and pros/cons or maybe some options I haven't even considered.

The longer story -

I gave up on Wireless Carplay. I still like Carplay, just the disconnections and inconsistencies drove me nuts, so I went wired.

Granted, you can still play music and stuff via Bluetooth Sync, and turn-by-turn directions still work that way, but you can't get maps and stuff without pulling out your phone, which I try to avoid doing.

Wired has the advantage that the connection doesn't drop nearly as often (I still get a hiccup every other week or so, but not 2-3x daily). Also my phone battery stays charged. And music does sound better than streaming over wireless - noticeably so in my setup right now.

But, digging my phone out of my pocket every time I go for a drive. Yeah, that is really the one thing I miss about Wireless Carplay.

A couple months ago I installed a Starlink Mobile. Even without considering offroading - I got tired of dipping in and out of cell coverage (I live in rural mountain area), and trying to plan drives into the office around my current phone call schedule just got to be too much. So I just threw in Starlink. Works great with WiFi calling. Work pays for it, so win-win.

Then I got the idea.... I have this old iPhone laying around. WiFi Call Sharing is a thing. So I gave it a shot - threw the old cell phone in there, enabled WiFi Call sharing. I can get texts and messages, and receive phone calls all through the old phone, so long as my EDC phone is on the same WiFi network. Got that set up and just leave the old phone in place full time now. Now just trying to make it look pretty.

After typing all that up, I realize I've went the very long way around the block to get around what I considered sub-par Ford implementation of Wireless CarPlay, only to more or less get the same experience. Only hopefully more stable.

I bought a mount made by a member here. @ArtHughes. The thing is sweet. Has a standard 1” ball mount and is solid as a rock even with an iPad on it. It mounts under the console grab handle. He had a thread here on it somewhere but can’t find it. I did snag pics from the thread back from when I contacted him about it.

Not sure if he is still printing them but I love the mount.

Edit: I should add, it was just the mounting plate I got, I already had the arm and phone cradle.

If you off-road meaningfully I recommend staying away from the rigid plastic mounts on Amazon and buying a Ram X-grip mount and use it with a left hand mount that attached to the driver side handle.

Not wanting anything on the drivers side grab handle at all - to be honest I'm too lazy to run the cable, and I already bump into everything over there crawling in and out so afraid this would just be one more thing for me to knock around with my monkey arms

That mount might be a good idea down on the center grab bar though
