For OBX auto 2.7, I’m questioning how much of a need there will be to get higher gearing.

What do you think is the best fit here to not drop too much MPG, good stance. I know I’m ditching those stock duellers. 70/25/5 city/highway/light off-roading.

I am either

A - upgrading tires on stock rims to 265/70/r18 to get standard load - Falken AT3W at 46 lbs. So stock tire of 32.1x10.2 becomes 32.6x10.8. Only half inch more diameter. FYI Stock tires are 41 lbs

B - upgrading tires to 275/70/r18. Stuck in E load. Two best options - E load Toyo AT3, 33.4x11.1 49 lbs. Lightest E load but hearing noisy at highway speed. Or E load Cooper DiscovererAT3 XLT, 33.2x11.2. Quietest and softest E load. But weighing in at 57 lbs, which is 16 lbs per corner over stock duellers!! Could be a MPG killer

C - swap rims to 17s and get the same KO2s that are on the BL. C load 32.7x11.4, 50 lbs. Maybe go slightly larger to say mid 33in, but doubt it

knowing those are my options, do you guys still recommend 4.27 gearing? And any concerns about weight on those Coopers without heavy duty axles?

You might want to watch some of the Stage 3 Motorsport Ranger build. They go through a couple of tire sizes, suspension changes and evaluation. The Ranger starts with 3.73 gears and “31s”. Obviously a bit lighter, but similar suspension set up and changes required.

Well 70% non highway. Not NYC gridlock but around town 20-40 mpg.

It’s interesting. It feels that most guys are quick to recommend 4.27 with the slightest of upgrade. Almost feels like OBX should have higher interest gearing stock with 32.1 tires.

do you think the Coopers weight would crush my MPG given the weight difference over stock? 41 lb per corner to 57 is a huge difference.

If you do any off road at all, even milder trails...avoid SL completely. It has no business on a truck that’s designed for off road, as it is paper thin and weak.

Wait.... Are we talking about P rated tires? If “Standard load” is P rated tires then I feel compelled to speak up.

P rated tires have no place on a 4x4 vehicle, even if you’re never planning to drive in the rough. Stick with the recommended load rating.

As far as gearing we don’t really know because nobody has tried it yet. However in general you should be fine to bump up one size (if they fit) and run the 2.7 with the standard gearing.

IMPO if you’re not planning to step up to 315’s (aka 35s) or regularly tackle advanced off-road trails then the standard gearing would be a better choice. It’s all about planning for the future s choose wisely. Good luck!

PEACE!

Yeah I understand it’s limitations. I only included that option because I have non E load options if I drop down to that tire size. Remember there are no C load options for these sizes with an 18 wheel. If I go E load, not SL for option A, I might as well go with option B, which is a bigger E load. 265/70 is E load and some SLs. 275/70 is E load only.

Also...Don’t forget the stock tires for most trims, even the upgraded generals on the BD are P rated.

so do you think I’d see a massive MPG hit on the 57 lb Coopers (option B)?
