I'm trying to design a compromise where I have an adequate platform for loads/sleeping while seats are in driving position, but can also easily accept a 3rd piece like yours for camping.

Your dimensions, in addition to what I've already compiled, would be super helpful.

A few suggestions:

I would carpet the whole thing that way you're not scratching up your plastic. You could throw a couple of piano hinges on it and make it trifold so the sections can't slide around in the back.

It’s not a bend. It’s actually cut to clear the bulge on the left side of the swing gate that houses the lock mechanism and the vented, plastic access panel.

So, when you sleep in the car like this, where do you put all your stuff? I just use a ground tent when car camping.

Personally I use a matching trailer... All my stuff is in there, and I sleep in the truck.

Scratching interior and self while moving it around occured to me too. At the very least nock down those edges and radius the corners a bit. Nit picky. Cool and functional build. Surprised it can sleep someone over 6ft too!

Hello everyone. I built a platform for sleeping/camping in the rear of my 4 door badlands. I saw the idea on the forum and made a few changes. I didn’t hinge the platform because I wanted the wood to be modular and useable for other things if needed so the pieces just fit in instead of hinging open/closed. I used 1/2 inch ACX plywood and coated it with a few cans of Harbor Freight truck bed coating. I used old scrap joists and ripped them down to 6 inches wide for the base to be level with the top edge of the back seat when folded. Finally, used a slip knot with 550 cord and d-clips on the back seat to support the final piece. I made cutouts for the plastic handles that fold down the back seats so that everything is resting on the seat back itself which seems to be pretty sturdy. Overall, I’m happy with it. I’ve got 80 inches of sleeping space with the seats all the way forward. I have a foam camping mattress that is super comfy and fits perfectly. I’ll probably cut a chunk out of it to rest level over the center console. The whole thing comes out easily enough if I need extra space. I added a third support under the platform and braced it with a 2x4 to prevent side to side movements and to add extra support underneath if I ever make a 60/40 split. The platform doesn’t seem to flex at all when I sit on it. I was hesitant to go with the 1/2 at first but it’s solid and saved some weight over 5/8 or 3/4 inch.

I've considered doing carpet, still might. Hinging it to a "z" fold is also something I had considered and was my original plan but moving the pieces around works well for me now. Still may make those changes at some point. I rounded off the sharp edges with my orbital sander when I was all finished. The couple of scratches you see happened during the fitment process but they seem to rub off ok. The plastic scratches easily though for sure.

Not bashing at all- Really nicely done Broncin' bedroom.

Prefer to not sleep in Bronco...Just drive and ride would be main plan. No winter camping for me any more...did my time.
Quality tent when required in foul weather...open sky please when no snakes.

I normally sleep in my tent. This is an option for quick overnighters, or very cold weather camping up here in Washington. I used to sleep in the back of my Ranger with a Softopper canopy.

I have a big collapsible tent I can put everything under and a table to put stuff on under the tent. Foodstuffs in a big rubbermaid container. There is room for clothes and such on the front seats and under the panels that hook to the front seats if you need to keep anything inside the rig. I have a ground tent too...this is just an option for overnight car camping (especially in the cold/snow) and it cost me one piece of plywood and a couple hours on a sunny saturday.

I prefer a tent but in bear country prefer the rig. Put stuff in lidded tubs outside. Hang the food. Once had a grizley walk through camp while I was in the VW bus. Luckily she didn't try to get in using her natural can openers. But I can’t imagine how much worse I would have felt if I had been in a tent.

That makes sense. I re-read my comment, and I apologize if it came off as dismissive, this is super cool. I usually have a car full of....stuff, and was wondering where you would put it. Great job. Living in GA there isn't much snow camping around me .
