After a couple of years of frustration, I have found a reliable method of having my iPhone (iOS 26.1) connect relatively quickly on the first try:
If you fail to follow this sequence you might have luck. I usually don't. Usually nothing happens or I get the "CarPlay failed to connect" message. At that point, it is usually fastest to unplug your phone, reboot, and follow the above sequence.
If I leave your my plugged in, turn off my Bronco, and exit the vehicle and then restart the Bronco, one of three things happen. Either CarPlay starts almost immediately, I get the "CarPlay failed to connect" message, or absolutely nothing happens.
Wireless? The composite hard top or soft tops do not give you a Faraday cage. Depending on where you are driving, you might be good, or some stray RF signal is going to cause CarPlay and Sync to not be "Synced". You probably know some places this always happens. It will also always happen when you are in heavy traffic in an unfamiliar place and are relying on the phone for directions
- Use a quality cable. I have found Amazon Basics and Anker to be reliable. Truck stop specials not so much.
- Wait for your radio to boot.
- Unlock your phone.
- Now, and only now, connect your phone.
