TX. folks, who knows about personalized license plates question

I was afraid you needed VIN also but I went through the order and it let me. Confirmed with tax office when I picked them up that I can just assign then the the new vehicle once built.

No, VIN is not required. The VIN gets tied to the plate itself when the vehicle gets registered with your local county tax office. Anyone can own a plate, but it isn't associated with a vehicle until it gets registered.

They are kind of pricey. $495 for 5 years with 7 letters. This is my future plate for my Bronco. Can't believe it was still available.

5 Years is the max you can personalize the plate for, but yes, once purchased, you can assign it to any vehicle you want over that 5 years when it is registered with the county clerks office. Have owned personalized plates for about 20 years now in TX.

Got mine from MyPlates back in 2012, paid the $500 for 5 years and still have them. Just pay the normal reg. fee to the state. Never been asked to renew or give them up.

Wow that sucks, for PA it's a one and done fee to get whatever kind of special organization plate you want is $40 then choose letters / numbers is another $70 if memory serves. From there it's yours forever no ongoing costs.

North Carolina collects the fee every year also. But, there's no limit on how long you can have the plate. I've had one plate since 1983. There have been quite a few that ask me to drop it so they could have it, but it took me 5 years to get the thing. So I guess they can have when I can't drive anymore.

According to TXDMV and Myplates.com, "You will be billed another 5 year term . If you would like to keep it [personalized plates] you pay the fee, if you want to stop the charge you can go back to standard plates."

They generally roll the cost into your registration renewal costs if you keep them. I must admit, this happened to my most recent vehicle, but not the one I purchased in 2006 for the GTO at the time.

I bought a vehicle a few years ago that had a personalized plate on it that I really didn't want. When I registered the vehicle in my name they asked if I wanted to pay the extra $$$ to keep the plate and I gladly gave it up and took the standard plate.

I ordered this custom plate back in August assuming I was going to get a 2021. Now with all the delays and me ordering a fully loaded Badlands, I am not so sure. I was an early reservation but who knows. Hopefully we will all know this month. I ordered the plate for 3 years and it was $445. I was able to pay in 5 monthly payments. I have not yet picked it up.

Ok, decided to change my order to Eruption Green and ordered this tag today for it.

I paid for one year and it was $195 on Myplates.com. I got my VIN today so I went ahead and ordered. I got a confirmation email saying it would be 4-6 weeks until they came in.
