So with the standard connected radio - not the upgraded one with 3 years - what happens to the maps and navigation after the trial? Do they still work, but are just not getting real-time info or updates?

I agree, just requires thought/planning to remember to sync down some playlists. Mostly fire and forget.+1 for Spotify, the family plan enabling all your family (no matter where they live, wink), is a deal sealer. Done, music for the whole family anywhere and all their respective vehicles. Way more value than XM or similar. Done.

SXM is still good to have out west where large sections of highway have no cell service. Playing their games and getting it for $5 per month was worth it when I lived in Northern AZ and traveled rural highways weekly. My brother gave me a Spotify login on his account that I use, but since I don’t have unlimited data on my phone I only play things I’ve previously downloaded while in the truck.Hope this information is responsive to the OPs requirements.
I use my “Sailor fone” with an unlimited data plan + hotspot to run Apple Carplay. My go-to iPhone apps with corresponding apps in Carplay are:
- Apple Maps - arguably best-in-class navigation, and free(btw, you can control the map Girl’s voice volume with the audio volume knob while she’s talking)
- Waze - my alternate navigation app, free
- Downcast - for my downloaded podcasts, free
- TuneIn - for streaming music channels, radio stations across the country + world, including, for instance, all of your local stations or NPR stations in different time zones, streaming podcasts, live sports*, live audio from all of the major all-news TV networks*, and so forth.
Standard TuneIn is free, TuneIn Premium, which allows content marked (*) above, and eliminates most ads (except ads inside a stream),costs a totally unreasonable $1.99 USD per month!!!
So, I don’t pay (extra) for navigation, I don't pay for streaming music, but I do pay 2 bucks for access to an absolutely gigantic library/ newsstand of content. I have never missed SXM/Apple Music/Spotify, etc for one second.
