So ever since I picked up my Bronco back in ’23, I’ve had one vision: white top, heritage style, done deal. Simple, right? Yeah… not even close.

I went down every rabbit hole possible trying to figure out the “right” way to do it:

  • Painting? My body shop basically said “it might look good… until it doesn’t.” Apparently adhesion and long-term durability are a gamble.
  • Line-X? Called them up and they hit me with “we don’t do white, it yellows.” Cool cool cool.
  • Vinyl wrap? Looked into doing it myself… immediately realized I value my sanity.
Reached out to two wrap shops:
    • Shop #1: “Yeah that’s too difficult, we’re good.”
    • Shop #2: ghosted me harder than a bad Tinder date

At this point, it was clear the universe wanted me to make questionable decisions… so I chose Plasti Dip.

The Game Plan

I ordered:

  • 10 cans of white Plasti Dip
  • Tape, plastic drape
  • Those fancy little spray trigger handles (highly recommend unless you enjoy finger cramps)

All in, I was under $200. Which, compared to every other option, felt like I was basically committing a crime.

The Process

Grabbed a buddy, set aside an afternoon, and got to work. Took us about 4 hours total.

Not gonna lie… there were moments.

About halfway through I started getting these lovely thick droplets spraying out of the cans. Looked absolutely terrible at first. Like “wow I just ruined my roof” terrible.

BUT… with each coat, it started leveling out more and more. We ended up doing 5 coats total, and by the end it actually came together way better than expected.

The Results

Is it perfect? Absolutely not.
Does it look good from 5–10 feet away? Absolutely yes.

The finish isn’t perfectly even if you go hunting for flaws, but realistically, nobody’s gonna notice unless they’re inspecting it like it’s at Barrett-Jackson.

Most importantly:
I finally got the white top look I’ve wanted since day one.
And if I ever change my mind… I can just peel it off and pretend this never happened.

Final Thoughts

For under $200 and a few hours of work, I’d 100% do it again. It’s not a show-quality finish, but it nails the look without the stress (or cost) of the other options.

Plastidip also makes a primer which is highly recommended for metal surfaces.

But don't use it if you ever want to peel it off later.

That looks great! If you ever choose to redo it for whatever reason I as well as many other chose to use Raptor liner which can be tinted in any color you wish. A paint camera of my Fifteen52 wheel came back as Hyundai Super White. My body shop did some trickery to reduce the grain size of the liner very happy with how it turned out.

Gotta give it to you for going all in even when things didn’t look good halfway through. You pulled off the look you wanted without the commitment, good work!

Enjoy.

This looks great! Any close up pics of the Raptor liner texture? Curious since you mention the reduced grain size.

I was planning on doing a vinyl wrap on my door jambs, but this gives me the idea that maybe PlastiDip or DipYourCar would be much better. I want to do this because I really don't like the way the jambs look with the doors off. I bought the jamb covers for around $300 but didn't think they were worth the money so I returned them. Someone on here was doing a Bronco Truck build and had the jambs painted black, and that convinced me that this is the way to go. But I would be nervous about the permanency of the paint, which is why I was thinking vinyl. But PlastiDip might be a good solution. Am I crazy? Are the jambs going to get too much abuse?

Years ago I was very active on NASIOC, a Subaru Impreza forum. A lot of the guys were using Plastidip to paint their wheels. They said it held up going through a car wash. I can't remember if they were using a primer. I don't think they were. One guy even used it to paint his car, said it took 25 cans.

Anyway, if you don't use their primer, you can peel it off if it doesn't hold up. If you use their primer it's pretty much permanent.

You get the award bro! I'd never attempt this out of fear that I'd accidently spray my dog or something... yes, please post photos of the liner. I'm curious to see how it looks.
