Well I’m cheap and I really needed a transmission skid. I figured that I could make my own cheaper than buying a skid, I have a Badlands so there are already the stock skids on the rig. I decided to start with the trans skid since there is not one and I plan on building the engine and transfer case skid next. My rig has the two cross bars so I decided to mount directly to those bars. I also have Icon coil overs and with the Icon kit they have you lower the Sway bar disconnect, Which makes the Disco skid plate the lowest point on the rig. This is another project for me to tackle in the future.

I do still have exposed bolts, I think I might buy some domed rock washers, I don’t really have the tooling to turn those myself

Nice work. I did something similar on my 02 Tacoma— skid plate and a self made gas tank skid plate. i welded oversized washers to the plates where the bolt heads protruded and used a grinder to make then as “domed “ as possible. Saved a few bucks that way

I wouldn't even bother with any bolt protection. I just keep a few extra bolts around and replace on here and there as needed.

I like the flat plate! Let the rest self clearance.

That’s a good suggestion and I can continue to be my cheap self

"Self clearance" is gold! Hahaha

Hard agree unless you find a big ol' set of grade 8 acorn nuts...

Nice. From one cheap diy person to another - this is the way.

I'm planning to unleash my budget Amazon plasma cutter and welder this spring, to make some skids and bumpers. What thickness plate did you go with on your skid?

I used 3/16 plate a 4x8 sheet was about $250 and that is enough to cover then entire vehicle. I was going to add some support structure in addition to where I mounted the plate but the Spans are not very far and it seems very strong.

I couldn’t agree more and also made my transmission skid. It’s hard to pay hundreds when they can be built with much less money and some time. may not be as pretty, but I know when I smash a rock, it won’t hurt my feelings as much. I went 3/16” and its heavy.

Looks great to me!
I'm about to do version 2.0 on mine and definitely see some areas of improvement with my quite rudimentary 1st go at it.
1st version was a simple plasma-burned flat plate. Adding some angled plates, stiffeners, and some recessed hardware definitely is an upgrade.

Wow, love looking at this DYI of making skid plates. It involves a little bit of engineering and then fabrication. And yes wouldn't we love to have a lathe and a milling machine to turn and mill parts too.............And might as well have a plasma cutter too. I don't have that, or even a welder although I too fabricate a lot of parts- manual cutting, trimming, grinding and filing. I made a custom heat shield for my front driveshaft, transfer case end as it is so close to the exhaust, it solidified the grease in the CV boot and made a lot of noise. The dealer replaced the driveshaft as defective and suggested I make a heat shield, which I did. So far so good. Keep the DYI stuff going!
