It's Sunday and I'm looking for some help diagnosing this issue until I can call the dealer in the morning. This afternoon the engine started making a clicking noise when I was driving home after washing my car. I can't tell exactly where it's coming from - a belt, the engine, a valve or what - but it increases in volume and cadence when I push the throttle. When idling it's much less audible but still there. See the videos below, apologies for the poor angle on the first one but I was home alone and trying to record the sound as I pushed the gas pedal.

This is a replacement 2.7 engine, the original died in February. I have maybe 3,000 miles on this one since getting it back in March.

Any idea what this is, how serious, is it drivable?

Cam phasers, same as the f-150 issues. See if it goes away when it warms up, it almost sounds Iike it’s lower end.
When it happened the engine was definitely pretty warm - had driven a good 20 minutes before stopping for 15 to hose off the car. Started it up for the videos and it had been a few hours so it cooled off. I'll see what happens after I drive it again.

I'm fairly skittish about this given this is my second 2.7...

see if there is any metal in the oil. On the dipstick. It will look like metallic paint. I feel for you on the 2.7 the dipstick brings up another sore subject. This might be a repeat offender… third time is the charm.

There doesn't appear to be any metal in the oil. Bad photo below.

Go through the engine bay and make sure none of the moving parts are hitting something. I understand you being extremely concerned after one motor failure, and it may unfortunately be another internal motor issue, but I would think it is also possible something external has moved from the motor swap process. Good luck.

If there is no metal, and it has good oil pressure, I am fairly confident that it is a cam phaser, but I can’t recommend what you should or shouldn’t do regarding driving it. I would call your dealer so they can arrange pick up of the vehicle. If it was mine and I thought it was phaser I would drive it.

Any lights or warnings on the instrument panel, or messages from SecuriAlert?

Sounds like Rod knock or lifter noise….

It’s a cam phaser, and it won’t throw a code. There will be no messages. The message gets delivered to your ears.

Thanks. I’ll check again but didn’t seem like anything was hitting, at least from what I could see.
