BAUS67, Crispy,
Do a search on the Jeep JK 3.8 burning oil - it’s a big problem with a lot of epinions. If anybody remembers the old days of checking the oil every time you fill your gas: that is what you do with a 3.8.
FCA cheated me out of my lifetime drivetrain warranty a long time ago anyway, so I have settled on running a high temp synthetic 5-W30 MS-6395 oil because the recommended 5-W20 MS-6395 burned at the rate of a quart per 1000 miles or worse and knocks and pings under load. The detonation issues go away with the 30 weight, and it’s more like a quart every 3000 miles.
My cousins had the timing chain go in his JK (thinks a previous owner ran the oil sump dry) and had to replace the engine and the burnt oil clogged cats. The reman engine builder recommended 5-W30. Apparently that is what FCA used to recommend in addition to running the engines at 185 instead of 195 degrees. (Squeezing mpg out of old designs.)
Anyway, here’s hoping the 2.7 TT Bronco has more towing capacity, awesome off road capability, and doesn’t send it’s whole user base into the murky waters of correcting for excessive oil burning.
