As much as Ford wants to point to the GP Jeeps as the inspiration for the Bronco, I think it’s pretty obvious that the International Harvester Scout was the true inspiration. A simple and more civilized Jeep (or ‘Jeep’ as they used to write it).
They sold 35,000 Scouts for 1961 and by the time the Bronco came on the scene, they had produced 100,000. Clearly, there was money to be made in this utility vehicle market.
So, here’s to the Scout.
