5 is the highest number I can count to. So every 5th time the odometer's fourth-from-the-right number changes, I change the oil. Me cave man, me have simple habits. :)
I get what you're saying, joking aside, but every 5k is just a nice, easy number to go by for me. I could probably do every 7k too but I'm just keeping it simple.
Im a bit more advanced, I don't count numeral changes, but every time that fourth digit is divisible (advanced mathing) by 5 (so 5 or 0), i change it. And with 5 cars that's about once a year.

Does the oil have to want to change or do you change it against its will?

Hard to beat Wal-Mart pricies on oil, 5 quarts of Mobil 1 Extended Life for aabout $25 bucks is best I've seen. An alternative is Costco Kirkland Full Synthetic, but it's only a couple bucks cheaper and somehow the Mobil 1 makes me feel better. That said I use the Costco Kirkland in my 25 year old V10 Super Duty and its never complained either. I buy the replacement yellow drain plugs and Motorcraft filters off Amazon, $10 bucks for a pack of 5 plugs and about $12/filter. An Oil change costs me about $40 bucks and less than an hour of my time DIY plus I get to eyeball the underneath of my Bronc to check for leaks or damage. 30k miles in, so far so good!
I buy Kirkland when it goes on sale, my last purchase it was 20 qts for $54, it tests virtually identical to Mobil 1.

With that said Mobile 1, still has a $10 off 5 qt rebate still going on till the end of the month (limit 4). Sad thing is, a few weeks back, I could get just about any Mobile 1 jug at Walmart for $25, now they are $30-35.

I don't like gambling with vehicle reliability. But I also don't like spending money I don't have to. I save that money for beer and pizza. That's why I had my oil tested.
Oil testing is the proper way to do it, but an oil test costs almost as much as an oil change. Nice to do it every once and a while to make sure you aren't overextending, but hard to justify using it as your benchmark for each oil change.

Now, at work, where an oil change is 275 gallons - we sample a lot, and frequently. We want to get every hour we can out of the oil and tip-toe up to that line of exhaustion.

Blackstone charges $40 for a standard oil test, and you don't need to do it every time. Do it once to find out if you should be changing your oil. Then again at the end of your planned extended interval. That will give you a really good idea of how your oil is holding up.

You can tell Blackstone you're interested in extended oil use and they'll make a recommendation about how long they think you should run your oil. I was at 3,500-4,000 miles a year with two year intervals with my Subaru when I stopped checking.

I usually use Pennzoil Platinum, because up until some idiotic decisions were made I was able to get it for $25/5qt. Now it's $45. Luckily I bought 10 jugs a few months ago though I've used 4 for routine changes already.

I'll probably stock up on some Costco, which high quality, while I can still get it for about $25/5qt.

$10 more per chance to have Ford do it with 5 tire rotation and they check other fluids. My time is worth that
Walmart now has Valvoline Restore and Protect for a slight upcharge over their regular synthetic oil change, and I don't have to worry about the morons at the Ford Dealership rotating the tires wrong.

Done, and Discount will rotate my tires while I grab lunch at the Hawaiian place across the parking lot.

My local Costco has 10 quarts (2 five quart bottles) for $40.

55 gallons would be 9-12 years worth of oil... That's a bit much haha, probably looking at a couple thousand dollars. I was hoping to get a box of oil or like 10 5-quart jugs or a 5 gallon bucket or something along those lines, rather than generational wealth of oil haha.
No doubt that's a lot of oil. You could start doing oil changes for friends and family. I sold a couple of barrels to a farmer friend of mine. When his relatives found out, he had to lock it up!

I recently purchased 6 5-quart jugs of Pennzoil ultra platinum. Sounds like a lot, but have a lots of engines to service (e.g., Bronco, whole house/portable generator, snowblower and other equipment).
