Brand Value and Disciplined Incentives Drive 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards Performance

https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2026-alg-residual-value-awards

TROY, Mich.: 20 Jan. 2026 — In a market where affordability pressures are pushing more customers to weigh the total cost of vehicle ownership, the estimated worth of a vehicle at the end of its lease term, known as a residual value, is a key indicator of long-term resale value and affordability. The J.D. Power 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards,SM released today, highlight the importance of residual values, with Tesla and Toyota showcasing the strongest results.

"Strong wholesale retention, solid brand value and a disciplined approach on rental fleet and incentives propelled Toyota to the top spot among mainstream brands," said Danny Battaglia, managing director of ALG customer success at J.D. Power. "Toyota topped six segments for 2026, including a four-peat for GR Supra and five-peat for Tundra. Meanwhile, Tesla avoided the high incentives of other luxury battery electric vehicle brands in 2025. That helped earn it the top rank among luxury brands with the highest performers in three segments–including the refreshed Model Y, which included introduction of a lower-priced base version and additional content on midlevel trims.”

For model-year 2026, 14 different brands receive awards in 26 segments. The 2026 award process consisted of evaluating 300 models through analysis of used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness. Eligibility for a brand award requires a manufacturer to have model-line entries in at least two different vehicle segments. To account for differences across trim levels, model averages are sales-weighted based on percentage share relative to the entire model line. For a segment to qualify for an award, at least four different model lines must be included.

Model-Level Residual Value Awards
Toyota receives the most model-level awards with six, while BMW, Lexus and Tesla each receive three model-level awards. Model award recipients include:
  • Toyota: GR Supra, GR86, Camry, Sequoia, Tundra and Tacoma
  • BMW: 3 Series*, 4 Series* and X1
  • Lexus: NX, RX and LX
  • Tesla: Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck
  • Chevrolet: Corvette and Silverado 3500 HD
  • Mercedes-Benz: AMG GT 4-DOOR and Sprinter
  • Subaru: Crosstrek and Solterra
  • Acura: Integra
  • Audi: A6
  • Cadillac: CT4*
  • Ford: Bronco 👈
  • Honda: Civic
  • Jeep: Wrangler
  • Kia: Carnival
*Tied for first place, Compact Premium Car

The J.D. Power U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards are the automotive industry’s standard in recognizing vehicle models projected to hold the highest percentage of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price at open auction after 3 years of ownership. A key indicator of brand health, RVs form a major component in the way automakers set the leasing cost of their vehicles. A strong RV underscores an automaker’s success in vehicle execution and market strategy, as well as the overall desirability of its brand.

Numerous variables affect the actual residual value of a vehicle over a multi-year lease term. Among them are mileage and condition; features and pricing; vehicle execution; used supply; market strategy; seasonality; and macroeconomic factors. These inputs require close accounting to accurately forecast residual values, so manufacturers and lenders with a greater understanding of each factor can equip themselves to optimize their leasing strategies. The combination of J.D. Power’s extensive transaction data and ALG’s deep experience in residual values allows for even more accurate end-of-lease forecasting capabilities.

Do Ford Broncos Hold Their Value?

The Ford Bronco has strong residual values, consistently ranking high for retaining value, with projections showing it holds significant value better than many midsize SUVs, often retaining over 50% after 3 years and featuring low overall 5-year depreciation (around 47-57%), making it a strong financial choice, especially models with desirable off-road features like the Sasquatch package or hard tops.

For quite a while now, the Ford Bronco has been a regular on the list of Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award winners, an accolade bestowed upon the vehicles that are projected to retain the highest percentage of their original MSRP over the first five years of ownership. The Bronco landed in the top 10 of that particular list 2023, 2024, and 2025, in fact. Now, the sixth-generation Ford Bronco is being recognized for the very same reason once again, albeit, from a different organization. Residual value is also a key indicator of brand health, a major component in the way automakers set the leasing cost of their vehicles. A strong residual value underscores an automaker’s success in vehicle execution and market strategy, as well as the overall desirability of its brand.

Wait what? Resale values of all EVs drop like rocks, with the CT maybe being one of the worst.
yeah but it’s all relative. The Teslas won awards in their EV categories, so just because Cyberturd won best electric truck doesn’t mean it has “good” resale value. 😉

EDIT: I do wonder tho how JDPower made their judgements. Even among EV Trucks, data I’ve found for 5-year resale value has Cyberturd last after Lightning, Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Silverado EV

Listing the Tundra as holding it's value with the reality being they are dropping like a rock due to all the engine failures, yeah I trust this list. A lot of the dealers don't even want the newer models on trade.

I wonder how well this will hold in the coming years. A lot of us got nice early deals on Broncos, and because prices have risen so much, our Broncos in some cases are worth what we paid 3 years ago. In fact I still get Carvana emails offering more than I paid.

But with what Broncos are selling for lately, especially the higher priced loaded versions, I don't see used buyers bailing people out by paying inflated prices for used.

I paid below MSRP in 2021 $55,000.00, today KBB states that my Bronco at private party could sell for $40,986 - $44,286.00. that 20% less than what I paid four years ago. Not bad. I don't care not going to sell ant time soon was just wondering.

Resale value means little to me as I don't even entertain the thought
Same with me. I tend to hang onto cars until the wheels fall off. Still have my 2002 Subaru.

Ive always gottwn rid of them at 50K miles either lease purchase and sale or return pnly because the lease write offs are great, and usually I bump onto a great deal on a compelling vehicle.

I do love the Bronco as much, if not more, than Mustang convertible after my upgrades because its prerfect for third world roads in Canada where bike lanes are in better shape sinnce no one using them ever and theyre new, and its great for curbs, medians, and overall stance in sea of cheap econo boxes now that every one is so poor since some folks thought would be good idea to tel biggest customer to pound dirt LOL.
