The rating for a typical 2,000 watt inverter seems to be around 20 amps. Is there any reason I couldn’t connect this to an aux switch without a relay? Have heard it’s a bad idea in the past, but given the 240a alternator, I’m not sure why this wouldn’t work?

Absolutely no! You have to be concerned about the 12 volt side.

Watts = Amps * Volts

2000 watts/12 volts = 167 amps.

You would need to power the inverter with a relay capable of switching 200 amps.

I don’t think your math adds up. Amps= watts/volts. The Aux switch doesn’t run 110V

Would it not be 2,000 watts / 110 v = 18 amps?

Most inverters come with a large (2ga to 4 ga) power wire. Should be direct to the battery or a fuse block that runs to the battery.

The output is 2000W @ 110V
To get that 2000w at 110 it has to take 167 amps of 12 volt to produce it. And your actually going to be at around 14 volts, not 12. Then surge up to 4000-6000 watts on start up.

No. Because the Aux switches are wired to DC circuits, not AC circuits. The 110 power from the inverter is AC after it has been converted from 12V DC.

Ok thanks. So I’ll definitely need to go to the battery and probably should look at a secondary deep cell.
