Summary: Oil change went well. No messes or spills. Drained 6.5Q. Put in 6.5Q

Decided to do my break in 1yr/2,000 mile oil change. Read a ton of the threads about making huge messes and not sure if 6q vs 7qt to fill.

To eliminate possible spills, I ordered this big mouth drain tub. It’s more than 18 inches wide and easily caught the initial spray of oil with nothing on the ground.

• Car sat for 2 days un-driven to allow oil to drain back

• Purchased new oil drain plug because was only $12 bucks

• Opened filter housing, oil fill cap, and dip stick prior to opening the plug.

• Let oil drain for 3 hours over work and lunch until no drips were occurring.

• Measured 6.5Q taken out

• Filled 6Q and measured. 6Q was exactly to the top of the 2nd hole in the dip stick.

• Torqued filter housing to 18ft/l

• Because of taken out 6.5Q, I added the .5Q more which took me right about to the twist

• Primed the engine for 30 seconds

• Let sit for 1 hour and still at the twist

Going to assume I’m good to go and no need to add the extra 1/2 quart

FYI - that second hole on the dip stick indicates the max oil level. Probably not worth it now but I would've left it after 6qt
There’s a big debate about this on the forums. Ford calls for 7 quarts but 6 fills it. My logic was 6.5 out, 6.5 in

Interesting technique - I have always drained oil when hot (at temperature) so the viscosity allows it to drain more quickly. But, I guess if you have 3+ hours for a 20 minute job, it doesn’t really matter.

On my 2.7 I’ve only been replacing with 6qts as the latest updates call for. That brings me to the 2nd hole on the stick which I understand is full. Also, Amazon has the drain plugs for $8/pkg Of 3 plugs. They fit perfectly and appear identical to the factory plug I removed 15 months ago.

There’s so many discussions on the right quantity of oil… And also whether or not the dipstick was the right part! I gave up trying to figure it out. I have a big drain pan and I buy the 5 quart jugs of oil. I drain whatever wants to come out and I fill to the proper spot on the dipstick. No idea what precise amounts those are.

Bronco has run well for 50k+ miles so I think I’m doing it right. :)

My 2021 came with 7.5 qts.... refill it when changed to always 7 qts.... still using factory drain plug... no leaks and no problems....

Let the car sit over night after 6.5Q and it’s not too far over the 2nd dot. I feel okay.

Is it normal after replacing the oil and plug to have what looks to be oil condensation around the plug? No drips but it appears a little glistening.

it’s a new OEM plug from ford

I bought the paper Ford owners manual for 2024 model year and it states 6 quarts for the 2.7

Is that true? They say 6? I guess 1/2 quart over won’t be a huge issue this one time.
Won't hurt at all. Factory overfills them pretty consistently.
