I think it's the antistall function. We think we stalled because in an old school rig it would have stalled, but the anti stall kicks in at the same time we are pushing in the clutch so we think it restarted but it never really stalled.

How does "antistall" function work? Is that actually a thing?

The bronco will automatically add throttle. Sit in your bronco and with your foot lightly on the brake let out the clutch slowly and watch the tack. The tack will go up without you touching the gas.

I really don't like it in stop and go situations. I'll be lugging along and the computer will gas it when I don't want it gassed...

I'm just going to add... F*cking computers. They are great until they aren't and then there is little you can do about it. Look at Tesla's autopilot.

As usual, abusing a system will create problems. Tesla "autopilot" works pretty well if used properly, I recently drove a little over 700 miles without issues and arrived relax because it took most of the stress out of the drive. Of course, If I had crawled into the back seat and had fallen asleep, it was very likely that I had crashed. That's mostly what you see in the news.

Prior to the Bronco, my JK Wrangler was still full of computers and it never rolled backwards while losing brakes when off-roading. I understand the Bronco is a brand new vehicle and Ford hasn't produced a convertible off-roader in a minute or two but this seems like a manufacturing issue.

It's still in process with Ford. Been there since the 20th. There are several levels it has to go through, looking to have a Ford Field Service Engineer look at it next. I suspect, based on what I've been told, it will be a few more weeks.

So, the "anti-stall" function aids you, it doesn't prevent a stall. The vehicle will hold for 2-3 seconds after you release the brakes allowing you to switch pedals and the engine advances to 1200rpm versus 800 when you start to take your foot off the clutch. These help, but I have stalled it before anyway and certainly, this situation was a little different.

So I am no expert off roader, however, I would hardly say I'm green. This happened today and I am at a loss, possibly financially, but more importantly I don't know what actually went wrong. I have wheeled plenty of times in this Bronco since Aug 2022, I have been up this hill...successfully twice before...with plenty of witnesses. I have been up many other hills, in fact this wasn't even the steepest today, as I had done a 39 degree hill earlier, this one was likely upper 20's, lower 30's. I have stalled the Bronco before, it's always restarted before and I've never lost brakes no matter at what angle and what grade. So I really have no idea what caused this. It stalled out around a 1:00 in and I lost power to everything. I did like everyone else yelling brakes, LOL! Tailgate is shot, bumper is shot, driver mirror also shot. It appears that the quarter panels and hardtop were unharmed.

Concerning repair, yes this is posted, either Ford or my insurance will cover it or they won't. If Ford won't I will try my insurance, if this is excluded from coverage, shame on me for not having this coverage, I will not commit insurance fraud in case anyone calls me stupid for posting this. My real aim is to figure out what went wrong. Total damage best I can figure is roughly $3000-4000. Oddly the real rip off is the side mirror based on my quick research.

I did take it to the Lemon Law and won a small settlement, had the insurance pay for it and off load it and bought another vehicle. I loved the Bronco, but Ford would never accept fault despite their own software throwing codes pretty specific to what happened. It took me about 6 months to finalize everything and about 4-5 months to figure Ford wasn't ever going to back their product.

HAHA, yes the avatar I suppose is a giveaway, the channel used to be My Three Fords. You could also say, Ford is making it easier and easier for people to want to leave. The Bronco is now only 18% US AND Canadian, so less than a fifth and the Tundra is more American than an F-150, so "buying American" is basically out the window. Being headed to four years in a row as the recall leader is usually not a distinction a manufacturer wants, but Ford doesn't seem to care. I believe Ford trucks were still great up to about 5-10 years ago and since the pandemic, all their products have fallen off a cliff. Their line up is still more exciting that Toyota, but quality and sticking behind their product carries more weight with me at this point. Their issue with my Bronco could have killed me in the right situation and it was likely a software update, plus fixing the damage, which overall was far more minor than it could have been. I even wanted to keep it, but it deciding on it's own whether it would run or brake when it wanted to was a risk I couldn't take. It's sad really, maybe Ford will get new management and turn around, hard to say.

Was surprised to see the “sending it” necessary to take the line you chose. I mean, I’m used to a fair amount of “send” required in my open-diff Base non-sas. But I thought you squatch guys just pushed a couple buttons and crawled right up. That rock you high-centered on would have been a nonstarter for me!

Not at all a huge fan of "sending it", usually I hate when people do that, but that rock required a certain amount of momentum to get over. Heavily prefer slow and easy over gassing it. I had successfully been up this hill twice before in less than great conditions, conditions that day were the best I'd seen at Hardrock. Oddly enough, in a rare occasion, this hill was better tackled by four door Bronco with the extended wheelbase, as much as I hate to admit it. Usually the short WB's are an advantage, but the longer one here allows you to climb the next obstacle before you bottom on the rock. No coubt people just seeing this one will draw whatever conclusions about my wheeling experience without seeing the two successful runs, but it is what it is. Going down was a shitting pants moment, but still tried the brakes and the start button all the way down. Lights were on, but any mechancially power to anything was out, no power, no brakes, no steering, nice that going down straight helped sort of. I really thought I was gonna roll it, but hitting that one rock on the side that popped up the one side really helped me slow down.
