Might need to get the windshield replaced on my 2025 Badlands. Safelite destroyed the camera on my Subaru; unable to calibrate. Had to pony up over $2500 to replace the damaged part.
Any advice? All I can think of is a trip to the dealer.......

Depends on the tech. A. Get a plastic film!!! 3 1/2 years/40k miles....many many dings is all. B. Hood deflector helps. C. Windshield/tire warranty....

I’m also in need of a replacement windshield - week old chip cracked in cold weather. Trying to have it done by someone other than SafeLite, based on all the stories.

Safelite has replaced 4 windshields on 3 vehicles in my garage, very professional home install in all 4 cases. :)

Call the dealer and find out who they use. My dealer is one of the largest, if not the largest, in Arizona. They contract the installs to an Arizona based company.

Find out who your local dealers are using them, and why.

I was looking into Exoshield windshield protection film. Issue I have with it is they said it would take 30 mins to install. But want to charge $600 to do that!
So they are saying their hourly rate is $1200???

Also the ppf does not last forever. Maybe three years and you need to maintain it to not scratch it. Make sure your wiper blades are clean. How do you do that if you are off roading, mud and dirty water is splashed all over your car and you need to use your wipers to see where you are going? Are you going to stop, get out of the car, clean the windshield and wiper blades and then repeat when you hit the next muddy puddle 15 secs later?

but wait there’s more! When that ppf needs to be replaced apparently it is a huge deal removing it and cleaning the old adhesive off your windshield!

So I’m just going to go w insurance. One ppf coating is almost the price of a new windshield anyway….

(DIY kits are about $300 and it is easy to do so that’s the way to go if I was going to do it).

It's a skill....I know a PDR guys who bills out $4K $10-15K day doing hail repairs. Some jobs pay $4K and he's done in 2 hrs.

I've been wanting to try the film for years will do it next windshield...

I have repeated this nearly every time people talk about windshields, but you just have to get familiar with getting chips filled as soon as they happen. I have a guy next to my work that does chip filling and I haven't let a single chip go unfilled for more than a day. I have had 7+ chips filled and am still on my oem windshield with 50k miles.

I even got a chip on a road trip one time and got if filled in 30 minutes by calling a mobile glass guy that was on the way to where we were going.

Letting chips remain unfilled through a temperature swing is what cracks glass.

I partial ppfd my hood in an hour after watching a youtube video. never did it before. looks perfect. windshield would be way easier as no complex curves.

So yeah it’s a skill, but a very basic one.

If you end paying, instead of insurance, go with non-OEM ... something thicker, more durable.

I had the same problem last month. It's to be expected up here in the northeast.

Just last month, SafeLite did a great job replacing my Bronco windshield. Eight years ago, they also did a great job replacing a windshield on my Mazda.

My 94 has had three 1/4" - 1/2" stars/chips that I used the cheap autozone windshield repair kit 7 years ago.... still there now. But, they're in a spot that doesn't bother me.

But yes, don't get behind semi-trucks!

I've had safelite replace mine twice, never had any issue with the camera calibration. Hit or miss on how neat the tech is when they're working on your windshield.
