You don’t pay sales tax so you are not used to the government doing this. I live in Vancouver, wa and we are used to be required to pay sales tax on cars “much more that just $1k.

Oregon does now have a "privilege tax" on new vehicle purchases. It's called a CAT (corporate activity tax). I came into play Jan 1, 2020. The DMV fees have gone through the roof. Good old Gov Brown.

Correct. However the dealers are allowed by the state to pass the fee to the consumer. A back door sales tax.

Copy and paste from the State of Oregon site.

  1. There is no sales tax on any vehicle purchased in Oregon.
    • As of January 1, 2020, certain Oregon businesses will need to pay a new Corporate Activity Tax (CAT). Oregon vehicle dealers are allowed to pass the cost of the CAT on to consumers who purchase vehicles from them.
    • If you are buying a car in another state, make sure the dealer fills out paperwork for Oregon residents so that you do not have to pay sales tax.

That amount for fees is pretty normal in Oregon. High fee state, especially with the raft of fee/tax changes over the last several years, especially beginning with the 2017 transportation bill.

Gas tax is going way up in the near future too, both by statute and through the backdoor with cap and trade.

Car ownership (especially a gas guzzler like the Bronco) is frowned upon by the powers that be here.

Bought our Badlands last week, here’s the breakdown of fees we paid:
$6 - plate transfer fee
$100 - title fee
$526 - state new car taxes
$115 dealer doc fees

For context, we bought in Marion county, and live in Lincoln county. Hope that helps!
