I need to move my 79 Bronco from my garage to my storage unit for some time. What tow method would be best for a mid sized truck and the cheapest? what precautions do I need to take?

If you go with the dolly you need to remove the rear driveshaft. If flat-towing, put the trans in park (or in gear if manual) and place the transfer case in neutral, if available. If your transfer case does not have neutral, then both driveshafts will need to be removed. All RWD vehicles need the driveshaft removed regardless of method (unless you back it on the dolly, which is a huge no-no).

I don't know about the 79's transfer case options off the top of my head, but if you follow those instructions you won't have an issue.

Flat-towing sucks unless what you're using to tow is massive, like an RV.

If the plates are expired on your 79 Bronco, then watch out for police. I got a ticket flat towing my old unplated CJ a few miles from a storage yard to my garage to work on it.

I had a safe setup including additional brake lights on the CJ. But a cop in an upscale neighboring town, gave me a ticket for operating an unplated vehicle. Told cop I was towing not operating the vehicle, just to get it to my garage for restoration work. Cop responded if rubber hits the road, it is considered as operating.

Reality is, if a cop wants to give you a ticket, a way will be found to give a ticket, and as my cop friend told me, it's a judgement call. So stay off their radar and consider a temp plate if yours are expired, and which route you might take in terms of potentially troublesome areas.

You will need a proper tow bar set up, lights and (legally) brakes. Hubs disengaged TC in neutral, some should have trans in park, some neutral, IDK on '79. Rear driveshaft removal works too, but if full time 4wd, do the front too. Cheaper, easier, safer solution for a one time thing would be rent or borrow a car hauler. Dolly with rear driveshaft removed might be OK.
