Well you’re simply wrong here. A Miata has about the same power and an even slower 1/4 mile, yet is the epitome of a sporty roadster
Uhhhhh what???

Mustang II 4 cylinder;

Weight: ~2800 pounds

Horsepower: 89

0-60: Between 13-15 seconds

1/4 mile: 18-19 seconds

1989 NA Miata:

Weight: ~2200

Horsepower: 115

0-60: 8.9 seconds

1/4 mile: 16.7

Not even close

Sure, on only the limited production top spec trims that’ll run you $100k at a minimum because of markups
You can get an R pretty readily at or close to MSRP in the 70k range complete with carbon wheels.

From what you and many others have told me, pretty much everyone who is going to buy it would’ve bought it anyways if it wasn’t called “Mustang” and didn’t have the badge... so why piss off your faithful customers for absolutely no gain whatsoever?

I’ve yet to see a brand new R go for anywhere near MSRP

Your own criteria was “larger than a SxS, 90 horsepower, and a 13 second 1/4” means it’s not a sports car

Well, the Miata is larger than a SxS, has less than 90whp, and is MUCH slower than a 13 second 1/4 mile. So is it not a sports car?

I don't really care about what is or is not a 'Sports Car', but if you go back, he was talking about a 13 second 0-60 time, not 1/4 mile. The Miata is much faster than 13 seconds 0-60. And has at least 90whp.

I said 13 second 0-60 not quarter mile.

And I’m talking about the published horsepower numbers not wheel.

Yup, I hated that ford used the mustang name on this. Even posted it here I believe. But now I see the logic. It’s brilliant marketing.

this thread might be 3-4 pages long if it’s weren’t called a “Mustang”. They did it simply to generate hype/eyes/clicks and it worked. Now if the car delivers it will be a home run

Our boy Doug Demuro has a good take on why they used Mustang as well.

Sorry but I’m not going to call anything larger than a SxS “sporty” with only 90 horsepower and a 13 second 0-60.
My 1974(?) SAAB 99LE (automatic 2.0 Injected) was faster. My friend had a Mustang II and we would do runs on an abandoned air strip. Even switching drivers, the SAAB won every time.

The E Mustang is WAY closer to Mustang performance expectations than the Mustang II EVER was. All the plastic dress up kits aside, as we all know those MustangII kits added 50bhp
