Well clearly this technology would never be abused, but moving beyond that, do you believe ANYTHING that they are saying about the savings of money? That’s some of the points. The other is it would likely save states money. I’m not a big fan here either, but all the people yelling about high taxes might want to look into where the money goes and how to make the spending more efficient like this example (with real proposals, not just yelling).
I seriously doubt that California would decrease registration fees based on saving any money (including the $20 million in postage fees, they would just find something else to spend the money on). If you have not been paying attention, California's yearly registration fees are both comically and criminally high ($550 just to transfer my 2021 Bronco based on a used value of $26k, my 2023 Bronco would be $645 plus $5k in use tax), they are not "losing" money on postage. They are making huge profits on vehicle registration yearly. Digital license plates have a bigger draw for the state, increased registration compliance.
Nearly everything digital is being leveraged to increase revenue, and not to provide value, especially where our taxes are concerned.
