I know there are many of these done on the jeep forums but thought I would show a simple 2 beer job with a couple of cheap switches off Amazon. I realize on the few occasion it is left outside that someone could open my garage if they break into it. I will take the chance that the tweaker looking for change and things to steal will not notice the buttons.
I have 2 garage doors so $18 for the switch's, these are nice due to having screw terminals and no soldering. I did tin the ends. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FKXRYT6?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1
2 Alaskan Ambers, call it $4
1 3foot cat 6 patch cord, from junk drawer. Like using this because it is a single jacked cable for both switches as well as patch codes are stranded so more flexible.
My 1st thought was to install them under the lip below the hero switches directly above the screen, thought about that for a few and decided I did not want to tear the dash apart. So decide to look at the underside of the steering wheel cover. Turns out there is a ton of room there. Remote is Velcro'd to the back side of the cross bar.
Think the worse part was drilling the 2 holes into something I have had 7 days.
Taking it apart was fairly straight forward so here are the few of the tips/tricks.
Bottom is held on by 3 7mm bolts.
Use a trim tool to pop off the flexible cover on the top and tape it up. back edge by instrument cluster stays attached.
There is a tab on both front corners that are tight to reach, I used a thin scribe to push them in and you can see the marks it left. Not worried about scratches due to them being next to impossible to see.
The above pic is also how you must start to put the 2 pieces back together due to the tabs on the 2 ends sliding into slots on the bottom piece.
