Increased tow capacity in Braptor

So, I read the details on the new raptor and saw this:

"Additional front and rear jounce dampers help absorb the load after landing sweet jumps, while new braces on the trailer hitch help increase the tow rating to 4500 pounds."

I am one of the lucky ones who can got the note from Ford to convert to the Raptor at MSRP. While I am super interested I wonder what was done to increase the max tow capacity? If I could do that on my current badsquatch I might be happy with what I have - but that extra 1K lbs of towing is really selling me.

I am guessing I would still need coil inserts or stiffer springs to deal wth the soft suspension...

I suspect the stiffening bar across the rear roll bars is a large factor. Soft tops require a ridiculous amount of stiffening to make them equivalent strength to their hardtop counterparts. My $0.02.

Interesting that they are sticking with the 4.70 gears with 37” tires. I also wonder if the trans gearing is different.

The main thing IMHO are the braces that have been added to the hitch to the frame. While other things such as spring capacity surely has something to do with it, the main thing was bracing up the weak link which was the rear crossmember.

Another user fabricated their own but did buy the Raptor hitch which uses a thicker gauged steel

Good question, I would think available now since Raptor is out.. but sometimes it takes a while for things like this. Keep in mind these go where muffler is located so something would need to be done there to actually install them. And even then, mechanically it will definitely be better, but published rating will not change.

The other thread (I’ll see if i can find it) had an aftermarket muffler which gave enough clearance.
and yea published is still the “legal” limit but a little better piece of mind.
