I've seen several discussions and been personally asked about moving the intercooler, modifying or removing the front shutters. Ford has recently released a SSM with codes related to restricted airflow across the intercooler primarily due to aftermarket bumpers. My assumption is they saw multiple cases of this code and were able to link it directly to the bumper.
They do not list the specific bumpers or say the bumper is the only thing that can cause these codes but it's evident the majority of instances had a common cause.

SSM 51961 2021-2023 Bronco Vehicles - Illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) With Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0096 And/Or P007B |
Some 2021-2023 Bronco vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTCs P0096 and/or P007B in the powertrain control module (PCM), which may be more prevalent in high ambient air temperatures. For vehicles that meet this criateria, inspect the front of the vehicle for the presence of an aftermarket bumper and/or accessories which may restrict air flow to the charge air cooler and surrounding sensors. Remove the aftermarket accessory and return the vehicle to stock and reevaluate. If the concern returns with the stock bumper/accessories removed, proceed to normal Workshop Manual diagnostics. |
