This is a Popular Mechanics opinion piece. See the link I sent above
And your sharing a computer generated article?

Your just arguing semantics at this point.

the 2 door Bronco was dying off in sales in the early 1990s and the whole OJ thing didn't help. The SUV market was booming an the Expedition came along to replace it in the lineup because that is what the market was demanding.

If the Bronco was more popular at the time, it would have been called that.

One might argue that the F150 based Full Size Bronco was the reason the Bronco nameplate went away, to be revived with yet another, smaller iteration as the Bronco II begat the Explorer (that sold better than the FSB ever did) which bloated into a Volvo P2/500/Taurus pig station wagon and the Bronco slotted in below it in 21...
The market changes, just like the Honda Accord used to be a small sedan is now a full sized one.

And the Explorer has been on its own RWD platform since 2019 I want to say. The D3 went away back then.

The current Bronco is directly aimed at the Wrangler and nothing else on the market...its roughly the same size as the first gen Explorer in 4 door form.

The 1980-1996 5.0 F150 Bronco was an undesirable dog that second hand Bronco buyers avoided.

I have two 2nd gen Explorers on my property, the 4 Dr Bronco is bigger, it is a mid size SUV, the pre 2002 Explorers were still compacts.

1992 Explorer
174-184″ L x 70″ W x 67-68″ H

2002 Explorer
190″ L x 72″ W x 71″ H

2021 Bronco
174-189″ L x 74" W x 72-75″ H

Overall length is nearly the same and width roughly the same. Height is different due to different wheel sizes, but that doesn't make it "bigger"

An Escape 4 door is actually Longer then a 2 door Bronco.

Vehicle size is determined by interior volume, not exterior size also. That is why an Accord can be a fullsized car without a sun roof and if it has one, its a midsized.

No. The Bronco went away when the 1997 F 150 changed body design. That’s why so many Bronco owners were thrilled when they released the concept vehicle back in 2016-2017

So the Expedition replaced the Bronco as Ford's full size (F150) SUV. Got it.

Careful, the author has a...reputation...but it's a window into maybe why the Bronco died in favor of the Explorer and Expedition.

Ford truck based SUV's. Not exhaustive.
Seems straight forward.

Platform
F150
Bronco -> Expedition

F250?
Excursion

Ranger
Bronco II -> Explorer -> B6G

Bigotry, got it. I was a child for most of the Full Size Bronco's run, graduated high school in 1997, so it was out of my reach or carburated... I always looked at the F150 as a mid-step to capability and skipped it and went straight to an F350 Super Duty myself... owned a half dozen Rangers too.

And while your username is cool, Oz actually had a Bronco ;)

As for the Lincoln Idea, I can't believe we have this many posts and nobody has mentioned suicide rear doors ;)

Back on topic, the Explorer and Mountaineer co-existed from 1996-2010 to the end of Mercury as a brand and the Aviator was added for the redesign in 2002. 3 different models for 3 different buyers on the same architecture and many of the parts interchanged...
A Lincoln variant is completely in-line with the history and tradition of Fords SUV lineups.
Maybe Ford doesn't have the budget that the Explorer once provided, the F150 is Fords franchise, but that used to speak to variants of the successful model, which is why the FSB existed at all.

Kind of bigotry, but just in the typical how-can-I-exert-power-over-you type of way. The same attitude lives on today - how many times have you seen people here complain about all of the wimpy-ass soy-boys buying stupid-looking worthless electric vehicles? Whether it's social or financial or class power, there will always be people trying to prove they're better than someone else.

Yeah there's a reason the badge-engineered bullshit is in every automakers' history and not their present - Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Scion, Mercury - there's no real need in today's market for so many tiers that offer no actual differentiation. There's a reason most automakers have settled on a single "common" brand and a single "luxury" brand each.

Stripper base models don't make any money (see: Scion, Nissan, Mitsubishi), and buyers today are no longer fooled by a simple headlight and badge swap (except for some reason GMC fans).

So the Expedition replaced the Bronco as Ford's full size (F150) SUV. Got it.
Let’s try this again in layman’s terms for those who never worked in the automotive industry…. (Sigh….)
Ford discontinued the Bronco on June 12, 1996 when the last one rolled off the line at Wayne Assembly, never to be built again….. (or so we thought.)

2 years later Ford introduced an entirely new design from the ground up, called the Expedition, a 4 door SUV meant to compete with the Chevy Tahoe. The Expedition was never designed or intended to replace the Bronco. Does that clear this up a little?
